    Is it more the “food”, or more the “fast”? While I don’t go to those places, at real restaurants, the portions I see (at least) seem larger. I’m quite sure I’m ready to quit before it’s all gone, and the temptation not to waste it is strong (raised by Depression/WWII survivors).But if it would have been garbage, and you eat it anyway, aren’t you eating garbage?

    If I leave it on the plate/basket, it goes to waste. If I do eat it, it goes to MY waist.

    It is not the food that makes you fat, it is the consuming of more calories than you burn off that makes you fat. If you want to eat healthier, just order one of the many items that are lower in calories, or order from the dollar menu with smaller portions. What you eat simply determines how you feel. You can lose weight on candy bars as long as your caloric intake is less than you burn. You will feel like crap, though! Stop demonizing fast food for poor personal choices!

    When society redefines eating from “dining” (a pleasurable experience in which the food is to be savored over a period of time) to “refueling” (in which the body’s “tank” is to be refilled as efficiently as possible), about the only way for restaurants to compete is on the basis of portion size. So they do.

    We could be more like the French, who delight in rich, “unhealthy” foods, but consume them slowly and in relatively small portions (do not confuse a “French” restaurant in the USA with a real restaurant in France)… and live longer and are healthier than we are. But that would mean giving up our culture of being at some form of work all our waking hours. Probably ain’t gonna happen.

    Too many people today want to blame somebody else for their problems. Neither Ronald MacDonald nor the Burger King can force anyone to eat (or overeat) their products. As for the children—they wouldn’t be eating fast food if mom and dad didn’t take them.

    What people has failed to notice is that the Obese go by the drive-through window for their food order because if they parked their car they would burn off calories walking into the restaurant.

    I can’t recall not being able to figure out a “Non Sequitur” strip before. “Arlo and Janis,” yes; “Non Sequitur,” no. Why does the husband say, “You’re not really talking about advertising, are you?” I thought she was. What is she talking about? Him, maybe? Maybe that’s it! Duh.

    “The only culprit is the abundance of fast food joints.”It’s one of the culprits, but not the only one.

    Lack of exercise is another. How often do you see people jostling for the closest parking spot instead of parking at the back of the lot.Once upon a time, kids actually walked (or biked) to school. More often, now, they are driven. In our neighborhood, people actually drive their kids one block to the school bus stop.

    Maybe because not everyone who eats fast food is overweight? As a somewhat thin person I eat fast food maybe once every other week, sometimes once a week.

    Carl’s Jr. / Hardee’s are the worst for your health burgers which is why I really like to eat them — twice a year.

    Not all calories are created equal. Some are easier to burn off than others. In some cases it’s not what you eat that’s the issue, but rather what you are not eating instead.

    It’s not the food itself, it’s something in the food.I vote for high fructose corn syrup as the culprit.I don’t care what the food techs say, the massive increase in obesity is directly related to the massive increase in the use of HFCS.The food techs are all in the employ of ADM or the companies that use HFCS.

    The size of the average restaurant dinner plate has grown from 10 inches in the 1960s to 14 inches now. And the most popular form of eating out is the all-you-can-eat buffet.

    I used to do aerobics, before it became passé. I had one instructor who worked us more mercilessly than most, and as we stopped running and started the cool-down, she said, “You just worked off 1/2 of a Snicker’s bar.”

    I have never eaten a Snicker’s bar since. If it was going to be that hard to work it off, it should not be that easy to put it on.

    Although it’s easy to blame the fat person, marketing (in all its forms) has a lot to do with it. One of my college psychology texts regarding marketing stated this premise: marketing’s goal is to create happy robots. The conclusion: we’re robots, but we’re not yet happy about it.

    Example: Muzak (the bane of every musician’s existence….well, that and disco…)

    Muzak is strictly programmed; it is far from random. It is documented that people have times of the day when their clocks run slower. For most people who work day jobs, they start around 11 AM and about 3:15 PM. And what does Muzak do at those times of day? Makes the music peppier; a faster tempo has been shown to increase worker production at those times of the day.

    You are being manipulated subconsciously all the time. One must be constantly vigilant to be able to resist.
