It only stops being paradise when it’s other people’s children.

I’ve always wondered….if Adam and Eve were the first two people and they had two sons, how were they they able to be “fruitful and multiplying”??? They didn’t teach us any of that in Catechism.

Children did not exist when that sign was made. So how did the sign maker know what children were?

It’s Old Testament stuff; most of it’s mythological (including Moses, Noah’s Ark, Jonah and the Big Fish (not whale, btw), and a myriad other stories.) The idea of a snake being the personification of the enemy of God comes from ancient Egypt, for instance, where the implacable enemy of Amun was depicted as a snake named Apep.

A careful reading of Genesis shows that “man and woman” were created on the 6th day, then God rested on the seventh, only to create Eden and its inhabitants afterward. It was a kind of experimental biosphere whose subjects were set loose. Generally speaking, the DNA of all earth life has two mechanisms through which to survive. Its host organisms live on a spectrum in which they live long lives with a little or no young, or short lives in which they replicate themselves as much as possible. So when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they traded immortality for fertility – a necessary choice to be able to multiply as commanded. Their kids interbred with the already flourishing homo sapiens, and along with whatever “perfect” genes were put into their parents, also passed on heavy doses of narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy – a.k.a. the dark triad.
