Reminds me of an episode of a TV show from long ago, possibly The Twilight Zone, or possibly not. Same scene, with the woman explaining why this was necessary, it’s best for both of them, she had no other choice, etc. She’s just about finished when the phone rings, and the man gets up, and goes up the stairs.

This is very similar to ""The Merciful", a 1971 episode of Night Gallery, features the story with a twist: an old couple in a basement, with the wife (Imogene Coca) building the wall and quoting from the Poe story, while the husband (King Donovan) sits passively in a rocking chair. Once she has finished, he gets up from the chair and walks up the stairs. The wife has sealed herself in."

It is possible that Buttercup’s whole plan for a wall and for surging law enforcement came from too many repeats of the first 5 minutes of Escape From L.A. Probably has it on his pda and watches it at breakfast.
