just curious, but when you attend Catholic school, do they pray at the beginning of each school day (similar to U.S. schools doing the Pledge of Allegiance at homeroom)?

Praying in school had been banned as early as ’74? I thought it was more of an 80s or 90s thing.

If one believes, there are prayers one can use before starting and finishing any and all things.

And of course, when she gets home in the evening, she’ll forget all about that prayer and won’t do any studying at all!

Engel vs Vitale forbade official prayer in public schools, not pupils from praying quietly. Ramming prayer down the throats of public school children is unconstitutional. The only time I went to public school until Penn State, I had to get used to no official prayer.

Haven’t read all the comments yet, so I’m probably repeating, but praying in school was never banned and is allowed to this day. What is not allowed is school-led prayer. And it never was officially — it’s just that many school districts ignored the constitution when it suited them.

As for student prayers, my favorite has always been:

Now I lay me down to rest; I pray I pass tomorrow’s test; If I should die before I wake; That’s one less test I have to take.

Only compulsory praying. This is totally voluntary, at least on Patty’s part. It remains to be seen how God feels about it.

Prayer isn’t banned. The teacher leading the whole class in prayer isn’t allowed because not everyone holds the same religious beliefs, and some don’t believe in any religion at all! Anyone can still carry a bible, and pray in school as long as it is on their own time. This perpetuated fallacy is so ridiculous.

“The U.S. Supreme Court banned school-sponsored prayer in public schools in a 1962 decision, saying that it violated the First Amendment. But students are allowed to meet and pray on school grounds as long as they do so privately and don’t try to force others to do the same”

Prayer is not and never has been banned in schools. The Supreme Court merely said public schools can’t MAKE kids pray. The children are, and always have been, free to pray on their own. Kids can choose to pray, teachers can’t tell them to pray. On the same note, teachers can’t tell them NOT to pray. I don’t understand why so many Americans have trouble grasping this incredibly simple rule.

They can never ban praying. Maybe they can’t teach/lead us in it, but neither can they stop us from praying!

Clever. Praying in school has never been banned. Just organized prayer. If you want your kid to pray in school and didn’t teach them how, that’s your failing as a parent.

Praying in school was never banned. Adult-led praying in school is what is forbidden. If the kids do it on their own or even as an organized group it is okay as long as it is not adult (teacher) led.
