Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for August 26, 2012
Transcript:
Phoebe: Dad, what was it like before the internet? Dad: I knew this day would come. That one day, you would ask about the BEFORE TIMES. It was a dark and brutal age, when typewriters roamed the land and IGNORANCE and BOREDOM reigned. It was VERY DIFFICULT to waste time watching videos of cats. Phoebe: I'm going outside now. Dad: Outside! I remember outside!

Yeah, I remember the days before computer games. We had things called “books”

I remember when they comics section of the newspaper was it’s own section and the comics were LARGE, numerous and humorous. Now they’re all shrunk down to postage stamp size and fit on half a page of the classified section and continue fail by trying to be edgy.

Yeah. Books. And newspapers. And we used to have this thing called baseball. It was something we did outside. And there was this game called “tag.” And this other game called “hide and seek.” And we had lots of other games, too. When it was nice outside, sunny, warm, and all that kinda junk, we’d love to go outside. And we did this thing called swimming, too.Wonder what happened to all that?

When I was a little kid my dad worked with computers. He took me to work once and he showed them to me. They were four times the size of a refrigerator, and not even one hundredth as powerful as the one on my lap right now.

I was asked once what I considered the most scarey movie I had seen. I said Fahrenheit 451. The person asking what was so scarey about that movie, and I said, the Gov’t was burning books. You can’t get much scarier than that. And now for the political side, it ain’t the right/conservitives that give us Political Correctness.

Before the internet I always walk around my neighborhood to see what’s going on.

I wonder how I ever managed without computers? I didn’t get one until I moved out on my own as my parents didn’t believe they had any use.

My home paper has two pages of comics on weekdays (along with the horoscope and a game or two taking up some space), and about 7 pages on sunday.

Life before the internet: Video Game help came from magazines, social networking came from the 2nd phone line, Instant messages came on beepers, pictures were sent by FAX, cameras had film, phones were JUST phones, people went to arcades or had LAN parties, music was sold in stores, and Bob Saget hosted the funny cat videos on TV

When the printing press was invented, people lamented it the way they do with ebooks now. There’s nothing sacred about paper.

The alternate reality you live in must suck. I gather the only channel you get is Fox News.

Something seemed odd for a moment, and then I realized that Phoebe has her hair in braids! It’s a bit like people who always wear hats, so that when you finally see them without one, they look like a different person entirely.

It was also before DVDs and complete seasons or series were a thing. So if you were an animation fan who wanted to watch cartoons beyond weekend mornings or weekday afternoon, you had to stick up on officially sold VHS tapes with a meager sample of episodes and record some on blank tapes.
