It’s sad that Halloween, like other holidays, seems to be headed for extinction. What didn’t help was when Congress extended that idiotic Daylight Savings Time into November. Halloween activities are supposed to take place after dark. That’s part of the mystique of the holiday… making your way through the night guided by flickering jack-o-lanterns and glowing haunted house decorations. Now the kids must wait an extra hour for trick-or-treating, which means activities are cut short if Halloween falls on a school night. Maybe that’s why I see fewer kids participating. Last year there was only one house on my block that put up decorations, and there were a grand total of two trick-or-treaters the entire night.
Schools are dropping Halloween parties. I’m now seeing more of these lame “Trunk or Treat” events that are taking place in mall parking lots during daylight hours. I feel sorry for kids who are being limited to these sanitized versions of what was once a fun holiday.
I recall vaguely that some of the old legends regarding Unicorns were a lot more sinister than the butterfly and rainbow variety we hear about today, or that unicorns had cousins from other cultures who were more wild and dangerous than the virgin maiden purity symbols from English lore. Also, there was earlier this year a thing on Facebook (well a link on Facebook anyhow) that led to a link from one of the science magazines/journals and paleontologists have made discoveries into a long-extinct ancestor of some of the horned mammals of today that could for all intents be called a real unicorn. here’s a link if anyone is interested: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/news/a37608/unicorns-are-real-fossils/?fbclid=IwAR2VQAG8Q51RXrcEwoDoG7FVFmzaSmM9SpHHeo-gn124Mcr19eO2MqOteYA (This was the closest thing I could find on FB).

I dunno, swapping out the E for jack o’lanterns instead of the O kind of gives me the willies!
