All Earl has to do is start off each “concern” with the following disclaimer: “Not that I’m complaining, mind you,” .

For example, Not that I’m complaining, mind you,but the thermostat is set way too high.

Her statement that Earl owes a dollar hardly qualifies as a complaint. But if it is to be interpreted that way, his statement that she owes two is also a complaint.

And their world is in perfect balance.

Use Jeopardy rules; it’s not complaining if stated in the form of a question. In this case, “Is the thermostat set too high?” It’s an inquiry, not a complaint.

It has been shown that men and women have different metabolisms and their relative ideas of “too hot” and “too cool” are different enough to cause thermostat “debates.” More than once we had a situation where we have set the thermostat and one is wearing a sweater and long pants and the other is in shorts and a t-shirt. When I had a private practice I set the thermostat to be the most comfortable to the most people in the office. If it got too warm I would change into a pair of shorts. It was easier for me to make adjustments and keep others happy than the opposite.

Good plan Earl.. trouble is.. it’s family money so it just goes from one pocket to the other. You need to negotiate something tangible.. like a plate of cookies or what ever you may be “up to”

I think Earl would come out far ahead with this deal. Opal complains about one thing or other in nearly every strip.

Me? I’d insist on four dollars and settle for three.

At this rate they’ll be ripping through their savings in no time…

Pearl wasn’t complaining, she was just making a statement. Sounds like Earl was the one complaining again. Now, he owes her $2.
