Cats like to hid in trees. The Algonquin Hotel’s resident cat loves to hide in the lobby Christmas tree. Brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘live tree’.
We (ahem) foxed our cat by having a tree that she cannot climb, it being some kind of artificial green stuff on a metal framework. No pleasant odor, and if you think we can get the wood sprites to visit you’re out of your mind, but the price is very right, amortized over a few years, and the cleanup is downright trivial. No fire danger either.
I put several cat ornaments on my tree, too. I also have some dog ornaments and birds and angels. I used to buy a new cat ornament or two every year, but I can’t find any lately.
Our kitten Monty will be seeing his first Christmas tree shortly. How long will it be before he’s tipped it over I wonder. Probably not long especially as he’s getting to be a big boy now.
This was is quite touching to me as we lost our cat Muffin a number of years ago. Muffin’s favorite spot during Christmas was under the tree. Muffin wouldn’t climb the tree, but once the tree was up she would camp under the tree until we took it down. In fact, once the tree skirt was under it, she would be there. All the while we were decorating we would have to watch our step as to not to step on her. My wife and I still talk about her each Christmas season we decorate that we miss the “first present under the tree” each year.

When I was a kid, we had a kitten who would launch himself into the tree. He was an unremarkable cat, except for that. He must have believed it was there, just for him.
I’ve only had one cat that would climb into the Christmas tree. She’d perch about half way up, so that she had a good view of as much of the house as possible, but never touch an ornament. Spooky, on the other paw, would sit on the floor and bat at everything within reach. All the unbreakable ornaments were placed lower for his enjoyment.
For our decades with Lhasa Apso’s we learned to avoid ornaments on the tree’s lower boughs. With their ashes on the fireplace mantle, not so much a problem.
Although I lost my Cyrena this year, she never bothered a Christmas tree. She was around both real and artificial ones. Maybe I was just “lucky” in the cat department when she moved in to my life. I miss her.

Stopping Muffin from climbing up the tree maybe hard. You two also need to keep a eye on Roscoe. He may feel it’s his civic duty to water it.

Pretty soon Muffin will be the ONLY ornament on the tree.

no, I think it was Santa Claws, not Muffin, in the tree

It kind of makes me sad though.

We’d have to hang the tree from the ceiling to keep the cats from eating the needles and puking them up.

Cats who knock ornaments off Christmas trees are fir-baring animals.

I don’t think hanging cats from a Christmas tree will catch on, but I could be wrong.
