If the chicken isn’t dead, it’s poultry in motion.

Next time you go buy a package of chicken legs, find one of the younger grocery workers and ask if the package is the front legs or the back legs.

I’ve never heard anyone say that chicken is not meat. Fish is the debatable one. I think of fish as meat, but many people say that it isn’t meat.

I always thought that “poultry” was a synonym for ‘fowl’, not for ‘meat’.

Opal should know that Nelson is just a kid and , according to his understanding at that age, meat is just meat no matter if it’s chicken, beef, or any species. Why get technical with a six or seven year old.

So, according to Opal, chicken = poultry, and poultry = chicken meat, but chicken does not = chicken meat. I never learned that in algebra.

Growing up our clan was ruled by a Victorian great aunt. For us it was white meat, not breast meat, and it was dark meat or drumstick, not leg or thigh. I nearly got my mouth washed out with soap for saying the word, “belly.” I was four.

Chicken is meat … but apparently Catholics believe that fish meat is NOT meat. I guess they think that fish are plants … at least during Lent.

Actually, the original meaning of ‘meat’ was ‘solid food’, as in ‘meat and drink’, or ‘funeral meats’, or ‘nut meats’. In the 1300s, the meaning began to narrow to refer, in general, to animal flesh used for food.

Ironically, now there are calls to prohibit the use of ‘meat’ to apply to plant-based imitations or lab-grown products of animal origin…i.e., to prohibit the use of the word in its original sense.

My earliest memory of my paternal grandmother was when she asked me to pick out a chicken for supper. I was about seven. and she had a dozen or so chickens in a fenced off pen. I picked one and she caught it and showed me why there was a hatchet always stuck in a stump at the corner of the yard. I got to be a part of the whole process of cleaning and feather plucking, but not cooking. That was her job.
