Much too much candy. Dole out a bit at a time or give it to a food pantry.

Let’s not forget Tootsie Rolls, Bit-O-Honey, Laughy Taffy, Three Muskateers, Heath Bar, and Milky Way. Where I grew up we used to get some popcorn balls, Rice Crispie treats and candied apples too (those were wrapped in cling wrap).

I also miss the homemade stuff we used to be able to get. Not just getting them, but making them. Popcorn balls especially – as well as rice krispy treats. Cookies were also good, but we usually saved making those for Christmas cookie swaps. As a kid growing up in the mid-6os, our girl scout troop and neighborhood citizen’s group would host an afternoon parade and an early evening Halloween party at the local elementary school. We would have a haunted house, and different kinds of games with prizes (kind of like carnival games but that everyone would win candy at). One of my favorites was the Cake Walk. If I remember, it was kind of like musical chairs and the prize was usually a full sized cake!!! I remember winning it one year!

I am actually surprised that there is still trick or treating. I know I see all the candy out for the holiday, but husband and I are married over 40 years – we have lived in an apartment complex and and a private home with children around. We have had 2 trick or treaters in all that time – 2 girls of about 11 who came together to our apartment (no children in the apartment complex). House next door now has a girl and the house on the other side has 2. The house beyond them has 4 children, grown now, but apartment complex). No children have ever come to our house. Nor have I ever seen children passing by in costumes out trick or treating. I sort of figured it was the parents buying for their children or for a party that the candy was for these years.

I love how they did the candy—no actual brand names shown, but enough lettering and the correct font so that they are instantly recognizable.
