/// Laundry day, and there’s no time to snooze.

Grueling work gave these women the blues.

Their skin’s now red and chapped,

all their stamina sapped

while they tread cobblestones in wood shoes.

My original comment: Their husbands had no idea that this is also how they made soup for them.

They didn’t know how to fold the fitted sheets back then either.

His underwear doesn’t turn me on at all.

There was an old woman called May,

Who folded wet garments all day.

Once hung out to dry,

She’d sit down and cry,

“This job is all work and no pay!”

Astrid and Elsa were the best salt-water taffy pullers in their seaside village. They gave the local dentists lots of business.

Betty and Veronica got through their work, by wishing they were wringing each other’s necks.

“I don’t know about you, but this was not on my bucket list.”

“You’ve already told me that your husband forgets to put the seat down, but could you please not take it out on the laundry ?”

Two laundresses visibly strain/

In the wind (not the rain !)/

In an effort (in vain ?)

Against most obdurate stain..

After the wash is done, they’ll fill the tub with grapes, take off their wooden shoes, and start stomping. The wine isn’t going to make itself, you know.

What rewards might these women obtain/

Should the sheets shining “whiteness” regain ?/

A trip to Brisbane?/

A vacation in Spain ?/

Nope – next week they must do it again…

My brothers and sister maintain/

Writing crap like this ruins the brain./

The damage is plain/

Yet I cannot refrain../

You’ve got to admire these women,

Using old fashioned tools to wash linen.

Because this was painted in 1907 or 1908, that would make the women dead wringers.

That no longer is an option (at least when I tried it); the isolated image currently is the same size shown by the blog entry. I have added a comment there pointing to the sparse info about this artist I used to point to here. So far, only work by him used here (2 times total, including this Throwback Thursday repeat), the February 8, 2022, strip being its first use.
