I jerry-rigged the thermostat to read whatever the wife wants. And yes she is using a blanket right now….
I also set up an Arduino chip to control the fresh air intake so whenever the outside air can be used to heat in winter or cool in summer it opens. Otherwise it just lets in the minimum requirement per the building code.
I met a young lady at a rental car counter in an airport in the US that complained that the building was too cold in the summer and 6 months later she complained the building was too hot. Both times the building temperature was 68°F.
The indoor temperature numbers just don’t feel the same between winter and summer. I think it’s got to do with humidity levels, and how much sunlight is getting inside.
My mother was like this. One winter day she was too hot in the house, so she turned on the window fan and sucked all the hot air out into the carport. Trouble was, she should’ve turned down the heater first. Instead, the heater was blasting away and the carport was getting toasty, and she still wasn’t any cooler. Surprise, surprise.
Go figure. It’s a woman thing. Remember, keeping the wife content should be the goal of every husband if you want to have any hope of sanity in a marriage…..
Exactly. One of my wife’s friends who simply walked in the door whenever she wanted in the winter would push the thermostat up to 77 degrees when we had it set at 68 degrees. Which was very annoying
Everyone seems different, I don’t think there is a reason to cover it at all. The utility co. tells us to set the temperature at 68 Winter and 78 Summer, and 10deg. to 15deg. cooler at night. I set it at 76 deg. year round and dress to be comfortable at that temp. Shorts in summer jeans in winter.
Many years ago, my family moved into a new house and, for the first time, had a “heat pump”. After three service calls, we found out that Mom would set it to heat to 72 degrees and cool to 68 degrees at the same time. The electronics were not sophisticated enough to recognize this as an impossible request, so it would just switch back and forth until it died.
AC and Heat are either on or off, there is no Full Blast setting. Either system runs until the thermostat reaches the setting you selected then it turns off. I’ve spent years trying to convince my wife that by moving the temperature much lower or higher than what you want, it won’t get cooler or warmer any quicker.
In my house today the temp was 72°. I felt a little chilly, so put on a long sleeve tee shirt when getting dressed. When I went outside this afternoon it was 72°. Pushed up the sleeves because it felt warm. Back inside for supper and that same 72° became cool again.
My wife & I are ok in the winter- low 60’s. But in the summer, she wants it in the upper 60’s and I’d be fine in the upper 70’s or low 80’s as long as the humidity is down.
This is true, but the opposite is also true. When the temp in the fall gets down to 60 we are cold, but in the winter, if it gets to 50, we are really warm.

I had an aunt who wanted the temperature in the house 60 degrees in the summer and 90 in the winter.

Stick your head in the freezer, but leave that thermostat alone.

gladys must be one of those folks who sits in the car with the windows closed and the air conditioning blasting on a perfectly nice day…

mom would just tell us if you’re cold, put a coat on. And if it’s too hot, wear shorts and if that’s not enough then you have a problem.

Brutus, Brutus, you can’t question a “logical woman’s” mind. Don’t go there old friend. Compromise, leave it be. Supper on the coach?

the perception of temperature is indeed, very relative.

Our thermostat is on 70, day & night, regardless of season & has been since 1986.. Who needs a Nest thermostat?

Never try to reason with a woman. Maybe she’ll settle for half-blast…

My wife has a tendency to turn the thermostat to the low 70’s and then when it gets close to the set temperature she’s cold and turns on the heat.
