I remember, a number of years ago, going over a bridge on my way home from Black Friday shopping. The sun had just come up, and there was a fog below. It was the most gorgeous view I had seen in years.

Have never, ever, yet been out on a Black Friday. Hate the idea. And I’m old, so surely will get through life without the experience. We’ve been tempted to go out and watch the feeding frenzy sometimes, and maybe surreptitiously help out an underdog.

My friend worked at a department store that was having a white sale.As items were sold, his job was to put more items out on the tables. He was bring an armload of towels to one of the tables when a woman bit him on his arm to be the first one to get to them.

Italian Black Friday (one of many U.S. imported recurrence) it’s only a good chance for vendors to make riddance of unsold stock.

I don’t miss getting out on Black Friday to get a sale item. Last time I did, was about 20 years ago when I went to a store with the Bullseye logo to get a digital camera. The clerk handed me what was likely the last one. A woman behind me grabbed it from my hand and proclaimed, “But I need it!” Where upon I snatched it out of her hand and said, "I need it too! Don’t try and steal from me again. By this time, everyone in line was looking at her, she left at the direction of store security. I’m pretty sure she still curses me to this day. I promised myself then, I would never go out on Black Friday again.

I miss it like a migraine, or toothache. My wife and daughter went this morning. My youngest daughter stayed home with me. We are enjoying the peace and quite.

I don’t shop for gifts. Uncle Sam prints mine. Ben Franklin still working and giving. Never ever had any come back. One size fits all. Just 1 for younger and 2 or 3 for older. Same for any other occasions. A little costly but not black and blue, sore and limping during Holidays.

BAH HUMBUG! Crazy to get out there to fight for stuff that people will exchange after Christmas for what they really want.

Ahh, the good old days of murder and mayhem in the shopping isles where there were no rules other than every man for himself. Resembled the modern flash mob, only the rioters in the old days paidfor theit items. Thank you Amazon for bringing civility back into shopping…..

When the kids were younger I did the sales to get them things we couldn’t otherwise afford. Now I need to pick up a prescription but I am waiting until mid-afternoon when things will hopefully have calmed down.

I’m sure Brutus would be fine if you and Mama went shopping. And if Gargoyle should happen to go missing it will be a very Merry Christmas indeed!

1952: Philadelphia police refer to the day after Thanksgiving as Black Friday a negative connotation referring to the horrendous traffic and crowds. 1975: First appearance of the term, Black Friday, in the New York Times. 1985: East coast newspapers report that the term, Black Friday, is not used outside of the east coast cities. L.A., San Francisco, Chicago do not use the term. By the late 1980s, Black Friday is used all over North America and beyond to the chagrin of retailers who see it as a negative expression. Many attempts were made to change the name, but it stuck. And that’s the way it was. UPDATE: 2023: Not only have retailers embraced the term, but are destroying it’s meaning by having Black Friday sales long before Thanksgiving. Anything for a buck.

I have never gone shopping on Black Friday. The mall I used to go to when my child was younger had a freeway nearby, and I would drive by the mall and my child and I would laugh at how packed the mall was. There never was any appeal for me to fight crowds – ditto Christmas Eve. I did my shopping early enough to avoid crowds.

Gladys strikes me as the type who likes to get in there and mix it up with the other shoppers. Her and Mother Gargle would make a real dynamic duo.

Decades ago when I was in high school and early college, I would always drive to the mall to walk around and look at stuff. I never bought anything unless something really jumped out at me. Didn’t mind the masses or the full parking lots. Today, there’s no way anyone could get me out there – even on a “normal” day!

To me the effort going out to the stores is part of the love that goes into the gift. But I do tend to avoid Black Friday.
