I tried to get my kids to go to Germany for college. They don’t charge tuition even for foreign students. Of course, you do have to qualify for admission. But we still got them through with little-to-no debt on our part.

College education doesn’t guarantee financial success any longer due to the exorbitant fees charged by many institutions. Need to shop around and find the value before buying into an emotional purchase.

We do need to raise children to be wiser first of all about everything. But isn’t it odd that colleges have those fees even with so much money coming from the government?

There are several colleges out there that make you work for the school while you are attending so that you specifically do not incur student loan debt. I won’t be going into debt for my children to attend college. I’ll help them if financially able – but I am not taking out loans to do so.

He wouldn’t be the first person, with a college degree, who’s panhandling these days! ;o[

quite the opposite, since “earning” a useless, futureless degree with no hope of ever paying off the debt, there he sits waiting for additional handouts

Actually, he did. Gender studies and social engineering degrees just don’t have much traction in the job market.

Comments are a little heavy today so I think I’ll lighten up and go read Non Sequitur.

I think any financial advisor would tell parents not to compromise their savings to pay for children’s college. They probably won’t be able to replenish the savings for their senior years, but the children will have time to earn what it takes (hopefully) to pay off their debts. I do agree with Li’l ol’ me’s comment above (start with community college, etc..).
