    Chain shot or bar shot would have brought that rigging and mast down first, then the round shot would have put holes in the hull of the stationary ship.

    Scurvy is a deficiency disease (caused by severe lack of Vitamin C) that affected early sailors on long sea voyages.

    It has been estimated the disease killed more than 2 million sailors between the 16th and 18th centuries.

    It was discovered that citrus fruit would prevent the disease, but fresh citrus fruit would not last long out at sea (no refrigeration in those days). It was finally discovered that adding 10% ethyl alcohol to lemon juice would preserve it indefinitely without destroying the vitamin C.
