40 mumble years ago, I was at a week-long aircraft convention. There was a Dutch family there with two little girls who spoke no English. I speak English and German, and could understand what the little girls were saying, but when I tried speaking German to them, they did not understand me.

You have to study Will’s strip carefully for all the other gags. Seagull have a girlfriend in the window? Seagull gets blasted out of the scene by the Blam, Spud getting hit on the head by the controller and Wallace’s hat in the last two panels.

Rose’s comment probably pertains to how those particular words came to modern English. Most have Germanic roots.
