I was going to comment on rose’s character.. but I realized this was likely a nice subtle way to mention the strips own medium… and have rose dunk on it. Hopefully this leads to her actually oepning up to it but I doubt that’s what the arcs about.

Oh Rose, that was a bit mean- we all know you probably could have skipped this grade but try to keep the sarcasm in check.

Can’t make everyone happy at the same time. Spud’s in a blind panic because no one noticed his snappy vest choice.

Rose was wanting “A Brief History of Time.”

I guess the shoes go into the harbor this week? What new twist will we have this year?

I never had a summer reading list (still read constantly, though). Is it a case of “pick five of these twenty” (numbers may vary). Do you have to prove you read them? And what are the consequences of reading or not reading?

I don’t remember having a summer reading list either, but I never needed incentive to read..

Oh boy, another “summer reading list” strip. Never had this when I was in school.

As long as it’s a real graphic novel and not just a long comic book.

I never had a summer reading list, but I was never in a class which was finishing up for summer, preparing us for the same grade with the same teacher the next year. I think that only happens in comic strips.

Presumably the graphic novel isn’t, say, The Watchmen. If it were, Wallace wouldn’t be so thrilled but Rose would be.

Anyone else from the SE participate in Battle of the Books?

A middle school patient read The Diary of Anne Frank for school this year and is reading the graphic novel this summer along with the Enola Holmes GNs after she reads the short stories. She refuses to watch the videos of either before she finishes the books. Says she learned that after watching one of the Harry Potter movies before she finished the book. Precocious child. Understands that movies by their nature leave out much of the book for time, and other considerations.

Kings in Disguise or Maus would be good ones to choose. At this level maybe Enola Holmes.

No doubt Rose will either have:

a) Summer reading done the first week and spend the rest of the summer reading what she wants….or

b) She’ll spend all summer reading what she wants and spend the last day cramming the summer reading list.

Regardless, Wallace and Spud will have a great time reading the graphic novel and pretending to be the heroes in it.

I read voraciously as a kid, but probably less than my oldest sister. She’s the reason the local library put a cap on the number of grand prizes one could earn, after she read enough to earn tickets for the whole family (7 of us) to the local kiddie amusement park, lol

Never had an assigned reading list, but then, I never needed one. My mother used to drop me off at the library, go do the grocery shopping, and then come back and try to drag me out!
