Well when you are colored bright red, yellow, or blue, you need all the safety protection you can get out in the mean, hungry city streets strewn with alley cats!

Those (who live in) gated communities have their advantages:

Protection, free room and board. The owner takes care of their needs.

This does come with a sacrifice (cost) – of losing their freedom.

There was a story by G. K. Chesterton which appears in his collection “The Poet and the Lunatics”. The poet, Gabriel Gale, sees a yellow bird attacked by other birds. He realises that the bird was a canary who was “freed” from its cage and sent into danger and says “Whoever freed the bird loves freedom very much – perhaps too much.”

Later he sees that the man who “freed” the canary has broken a fish tank and let the fish inside die so he is certainly a lunatic who loves freedom too much.

The same fence keeps people in as well as out. The difference is the attitude of the inhabitants and the price of the accommodations.

There’s different kinds. Some gates keep people out. Some keep people in.

I once adopted a cat who had been on display in the window of a bird shop for three days. That cat was soooooo happy to be out of there. She raced around the house for more than an hour but, just as I was worried there was something wrong with her, she settled down for a contented nap in the blessed quiet.

The crow envied the canary for his fine singing voice. The canary envied the crow because he had freedom.

White bird in a golden cage alone. That old song is supposed to be about the white bird representing peace. (I like birds!)
