He could be thinking the same thing. I remember when I got rid of my family’s old couch from our basement years ago, which was given to me for my first apartment. I’ve never had a couch more comfortable than that one, and I miss it to this day.
It’s like having that old car and knowing every good and bad sound, odors that are new and unacceptable and repairs that are needed now or can wait. You keep putting money into it and tolerating the nuisance attentions it needs with the thought that it’s not a lemon and the belief “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore”.
Then the day comes when you see one on the road or in an ad and the shiny beeatch ride beckons you with promises of what could be. You go for it and, unlike many second or third marriages, the change was worth it. You know you did the right thing when you say to yourself, “Self, why didn’t you do this long ago.”

New cars, new couches, new abundance of caution and overprotectiveness. I still regret the way I kept the dogs off the new couch fifteen years ago. Couch is still here and the poor dogs are gone.
We still are using the same mattress we bought 41 years ago – and it is still good and comfortable. I am still using the desk my parents bought for me when I was in second grade – almost 60 years ago – and I still bang my knee on the same spot on the leg (cushioned it, but the cushioning always seems to fall down just before my knee hits it). Other than additional storage pieces over the decades last bought furniture for the house about 25 years ago. Then again, I am still wearing clothing I bought in late 1980s/early 1990s and it still fits despite my having lost around 85 lbs since then.

It’s easier when you’ve got your partner to make new memories.

Agreed, just got a new mattress…

Be strong. Pull out your phone. Find one you like and say this is the one I’ve dreamed of for years, then hit the order button.

On the off chance that Jimmy Johnson &/or any GoComics bigwigs read this: Could you PLEASE give us the missing early years of the strip? Thanks!

I like Arlo’s argument in the first panel.

Ok, the tear is a bit much. It’s not like losing a favorite t-shirt, is it?

Especially the snuggles.

A new one won’t have the same comfy butt print.

Just have him sniff the cushions. He’ll be down at the furniture store like a shot.

Well played!

Look on the bright side Arlo, you and Janis can have fun breaking in the new couch. “Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink!”

Janis has lost the interest in intimacy.

Ugh. Now you will have to be careful not to spill anything and agonize over every crumb.

If it’s only “out of style” I’m with Arlo, but if the seating support has degraded noticeably I’m with Janis.
jonesbeltone about 4 years ago
I know me-I keep sheets covering the couch, chair and love seat. My wife could care less, I do it for me.
sobrown51 about 4 years ago
There is a chance Arlo uses this ploy because he is too cheap to want to buy another couch.
cuzinron47 about 4 years ago
I’m in the same boat. My couch is sagging to the point it has to be propped up, but I’m afraid I’ll never find one so comfortable.

I don’t get sentimental over furniture or clothing.

Soft hearted. Its a ploy. Janis will comfort him shortly.

The butt impressions… You can tell Arlo’s spot from Janis’s.

Tear? Are you speaking of the gap between the cushions?
bryan42 about 4 years ago
Usually I can relate very well with Arlo but not on this. No couch that old can still be comfortable, especially for a ‘mature’ body.
