Don’t we all feel the same way no matter where we’re employed?

And when you find the person who is holding a gun on your dog’s head and rescue the canine you can quit.

I’m glad my folks encouraged us to have good work ethics. Even with a college education, I ended up doing blue collar work most of my adult life. Hard work…back breaking work at times. There are too many people out there that think they are privileged and shouldn’t have to “work” to get ahead. To them I say ….well I can’t say that or GoComics will ban me.

Good ethic vs. instant gratification ethic. Unfortunately, I know too many kids who feel they should get paid for doing nothing. This is not a figure of speech; I literally mean kids feel they should get a 4-figure allowance from the government as thanks for being alive or some other goofus reason.

I have not loved all my jobs. Some days I have loved them less than others. Even now- having a job I love- occasionally there is a day that’s less than lovable. But I for the most part, I have liked working. Even jobs I didn’t love, I found some joy in. I did not intend to sell shoes for 5 years and be a store manager. But I was actually good at it, and I found joy in doing a good job, even at something I didn’t like. So many of my friends and younger people (if a lot of those older than me were the same, they never told me) were never able to understand that.

Historically, in America, one worked a “job” only when all else failed and money was needed to keep one’s own business alive when times were slow, whether that business was making lumber, building cars, farming, etc. It was very hard for “employers” to attract people to come work in their businesses, so various “perks” were added to the pay, such as health insurance. That was barely 100 years ago. And now a lot of people think being an employee is the ideal way to make a living; the “employers” won. Now the “employee” mindset is passed from parents to their children and schools focus on making the next generation good employees. Today only about 7% of Americans are self-employed. And Americans ask why other countries are so much more prosperous.

It is no coincidence that ‘work’ is a four letter word.

I don’t. Waiting to be assigned to jury duty once, I was talking to another person waiting there. She told me about her job, then asked me about mine. About 90 seconds into my response she asked, “You don’t need coffee in the morning, do you?” No. I don’t. Work is love made visible (Og Mandino??)

Anyone who thinks their job is stupid – should find another or use it to keep them going while they train for something which interests them more – though I doubt anything would meet this idea for this fellow.
