When piston engines were first invented, the cylinders were bored with machines originally designed for making cannon barrels. Many of the best inventions have had their origins as warmaking technology.
What we have here is multiple inventions: 1. Blast furnace, 2. Cast Iron, 3. Boring lathe, 4. Mined sulphur, 5. Refined potassium nitrate, 6. Charcoal (for the blast furnace and the gunpowder)
And, artillery is born! Aberdeen Proving Grounds beware! My X and his younger brother were both born when their father was a second Lt. stationed there.
