On the other hand, there probably won’t be any other insects at the beach today.

Geez! They don’t like us a lot more than we don’t like them. Just leave them alone.

Well, I never expected to see prehistoric Aragog at the beach. …Brighton, perhaps?

Almost the same thing happened to me while luxuriating on a beautiful Cancun beach …. when, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted movement in the sand, turned out to be a teensy crab digging its way up.

I’m surprised the spider didn’t make the poop sound when it came out. That’s what Peter did in his loincloth.

We had black widows from time to time in our back yard. They creep me out. Then we had an infestation of brown widows two years ago, which got rid of all the black widows. That didn’t bother me at all. The browns are less likely to bite and are more likely to stay hidden. Then, like the ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, the blacks came back and drove out the browns. Now we have more black widows than we ever did before.

I’ve always had a ‘thing’ about spiders. To help me get over it, I’ve included them in my novels. It helps to desensitize me a bit—but I still can’t handle being around black widows. About a month ago, we had one crawling on the floor of our kitchen. I quickly killed it, but I had nightmares for the next three nights. A few days ago, in the evening, I almost walked into the web of one (I was bare-legged), with it sitting in the middle of the web strand at the level of my shins.

If I saw a spider like the one depicted in the cartoon, I would have nightmares for twenty years.
