I have always found that making the pies too far ahead of time can lead to their mysterious disappearance before the Thanksgiving feast! Do we have a band of robber mice!?
This can be a stressful time, for sure. Especially when a pie has gone missing. I wonder if they are having a close family Thanksgiving, or if the neighborhood will be there.
Apple and pumpkin present and accounted for. That leaves MINCEMEAT. THEY TOOK THE GOOD STUFF. (Depending on whether the Woman makes it with brandy, those may be some pretty happy mice there for a while!)
The Robber Mice will enjoy a nice pie for Thanksgiving, and with the addition of Goldie to the family and BCN, it will be a wonderful Thanksgiving indeed!
OT, but for the past couple weeks there’s been a young grey and white cat with a collar in the yard looking in at my cats. I checked his collar and called the phone number just to make sure he wasn’t lost. So far, no one has returned my call. Not a good sign. Our local shelter closed permanently last June and so far this year I’ve taken in four kittens displaced by floods, so while I could make a place for him and will if necessary I’d like to find his people. I guess going around the neighborhood to see if anyone knows his story is next. He’s well fed so someone is caring for him. Goldie’s story is turning out to be timely for us.
I hope that pumpkin pie was in the fridge. Did you ever eat (or begin to eat a bite of) a piece of leftover pumpkin pie that was out on the counter all night?
Wanted to give an update on Skywalker. Apparently the way to her heart is through breakfast lol. She rubbed on my legs several times while I was dishing up the breakfast cans today. I’m still not allowed to touch her, but progress is progress.
Unfortunately, her spine seems worse. She managed to get onto the back of a chair the other day, but she fell off when she fell asleep. Now she’s dragging her back legs a bit more than she was for a while. Hopefully she just bruised herself and things will go back to improving soon. She has done well with litterbox, for the most part, but still has accidents sometimes. I think there may be some nerve damage, not just the swelling that my vet thought.
LOL! Once when my sis (kid #3) was very young, mom forgot & left her in the nursery when we came home from church. A few years later she left my kid bro (kid #4) in the crib at home & didn’t remember until we got to church.
A properly working stove this year means no pie for Thanksgiving this year. I’ve been making Indian pudding for Thanksgiving for years. None of that canned stuff you might find in supermarkets this time of year (yes, some supermarkets actually do sell canned Indian pudding), I make it from scratch. But last year without a oven out of commission had to have a no bake pumpkin pie instead. Maybe had the electric turkey roaster been empty and cleaned I could have used it to to make the pudding, tend to prefer pies for Christmas now.
OT: Mincemeat Several have asked or reminisced about Mincemeat and what is in it. I know modern versions are more fruit than meat. However, I edited a local cookbook a couple of years ago, and someone brought me the recipe from a lady I had briefly met when I first started working at the bank 20 years ago. She was in her 80s then and this is her mother’s recipe.
OT. The Big Gray Kitty turns 14 today. He’s been moping around and calling for his departed brother (the Pucky look alike). Going to be a long day of howling. So hard to console him when he gets like this.
HIs Majesty is now officially an “it”. Poor little fella. I had to take up the food Monday night at 8pm. At 7:30 I gave everyone canned food to make sure they had full bellies. By 1am HM was really hungry again and I was the target of his hangry rage. He kept clanging his tags on his food bowl. I keep his in my headboard along with his food. When clanging didn’t have the desired result he picked it up and dropped it on my head TWICE. After the second aerial assault I dragged his bowl under the covers with me. That lasted until he got under he covers to clang his tags again. I finally gave up and took his bowl to the kitchen. Once settled back under the covers HM proceeded to try to get into his food containers with gusto. Needless to say I didn’t get any sleep that night and it wasn’t due to excessive worrying over his surgery. All is well. I picked him up yesterday afternoon and he ate his weight in food. He ate half of my chicken wings and a little smokie sausage too. I could tell he went to the litter box because he had litter stuck to his cone of shame. His biggest problem has been with the cone. He doesn’t fit in places he is used to fitting and can’t scratch his ears. The biggest problem he has with the cone is he can’t figure out how to drink water from the big water bowls. Now he is drinking from my glass. I tip it so it fits inside his cone and he fills up. Whenever he wants a drink he comes to get me for water. He is still chasing the girls all over the house and yes he is still the KING.
I don’t know about the Woman, but my time-table is looking better; the cranberry space goo (cranberry orange relish in this case) is chilling in the fridge and the pecan pie is baking in the oven. I think I can rest for a bit.
We are unexpectedly having Thanksgiving today due to my son’s work schedule. My black kitty is going by the stove to check on the turkey every 15 minutes for the past 3 hours! LOL

My pumpkin pie is done and hopefully will be edible. Everything else should be pretty simple tomorrow. Wishing the Orb and all fur-, feather-, and scale-babies a warm and happy Thanksgiving!

It seems like maybe the robber mice did make off with a pie if one is really missing.

At this point, the Woman had better have a fresh turkey or honey basted ham (maybe both) or this celebration is going to be all about the sides.

As long as the Woman never forgets she has cats.

I’ve felt like the woman when preparing for something important.
Off topic, we are off to Toronto today to get the results of Paul’s MRI on Sunday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for positive results.

The woman is too young for this. The obsession with lists usually begins in the Fifties. Dang, where did my Thanksgiving meal list go?
serenasakitty about 5 years ago
Maybe it was sweet Pucky himself that took the pie. He was the one that dressed up some time ago so he could go do ‘crime stuff.’

We have a teenage boy to blame missing pies on. To be fair, he doesn’t bother hiding the empty tins in his room.

1 gallon chopped apples. 1 1/2 Tbs. Cinnamon 2 quarts applesauce 4 lbs. Ground meat (lean beef or pork)1 pint vinegar 3 lbs. Raisins 1 pint beef broth 1 pint fruit juice (plum, peach, ect.)5 pints sugar.
Mix all ingredients together in a large pot. Simmer until chopped apples are soft and raisins are plump. May be frozen for several months.
