Years ago, after my dad’s death, EVERYONE brought potato salad when they visited. I’m not joking, I had to throw away over a gallon a day. It took quite some time before anyone could look at potato salad.

Bringing your own is the only way to be sure there will be one you like.

That’s why it’s good to have everyone pick what they are bringing ahead of time.

At our church pot-lucks those with a last name beginning A to F brought bread or salad, G to L brought an entrée, M through S a veggie, and the rest brought dessert. Hubby and I usually swapped with somebody in the entrée group, so we’d have a vegetarian dish we could eat.

The joke at our church is that since we don’t believe in “luck”, we call it a “pot trust” (trusting that everyone will be something in their pot)!

    1) For potlucks, I generally brought a dish of my own invention, which both surprised and pleased everyone else.

    2) But once, invited to a pot-luck birthday party when I didn’t have time to prepare anything, I decided to be “different” and bring some sushi from a restaurant near where I worked.

Arriving at the party, I found that almost everyone else had brought cake, cookies, or something with pasta. But unbeknownst to us, the birthday girl had a gluten allergy. She was so glad that I had brought something she could actually eat. 8^)

I remember one potluck where about half the people brought cucumber salads.

Pot luck needs a list, sign-up for appetizer or entree or salad or side dish or dessert, with A limit on each category. (I ended-up bringing the 5th fruit salad to a picnic. Surprise, the men “organized” it )

At least everybody didn’t bring potato chips.

I had a secret to avoid duplicating a dish at potlucks – a 1920s cookbook by the Good Housekeeping Institute. From hors d’oeuvres to dessert I was always able to bring something new.

On the bright side, you can have a potato salad taste-off for the best batch….

The rule (after this sort of thing happened all the time) in one group I was in was, “Bring the SECOND thing you think of.” That worked. There was such a thing as too much in sync….
