For a brief moment, Calvin was Willie Mays.

Sorry for my ignorance about baseball, but… would that catch even count as an out?

I remember not long ago someone at the stands caught a ball that the outfielder was about to catch.  People were angry at the fan because the out was not called because the outfielder was not the one who caught the ball.

Since Calvin is on the batting team and not on the defending team, how is that different from having a fan catch the ball?

Well for once I predicted the outcome , although I was reminded that the teams had changed over. Just how does the umpire call this one? Calvin was an extra fielder for the pitching side but part of the batting side team ? Cue the classic “Who’s on first”

Shouldn’t there have been a new left-fielder to replace Calvin when the team switched? I don’t see your team’s left fielder going for the ball, kid!

Calvin’s coach has to bear some of the blame, leaving the kid out there when the teams swapped places.

Well darn. Probably the first, best and only great athletic accomplishment that Calvin will ever do, and it is against his own team. Hard to live that down, until you graduate and create a multi-billion dollar empire.

Sadly, no adult, no leader, no one actually takes the time to help the kid learn how to play the game. No wonder Calvin hates organized sports.

Don’t let those technical rules get you down. You caught a long ball today and you should be proud. All those years of Calvinball were good practice.

I am a former little league umpire and played the game thru college. I am not positive of the rule for this as I doubt it comes up much, but I would think the ball has to be caught by a member of the team on the field to be an official out. Otherwise is likely a ground rule double or at worst player interference (in which case might be an out since he is on the other team and not supposed to be on the field.)

Yeah, I remember that day playing softball in gym — hit a home run AND caught a throw from first base to tag a guy out at home.

I take my glory where I find it.

I can bat or field equally well with either hand (which is to say, not well at all), but there were rarely enough gloves to go around in school baseball so we brought our own, I always went lefty so I didn’t have to share my glove.

Yeah, this is the coach’s fault. The guy is getting paid to teach young kids the basics and he’s not even paying attention to what they’re doing. It’s Calvin’s first day and he hardly knows the rules, it’s up to Mr. Snodgrass or whatever his name is to give him some guidance. But more likely the guy will crab because Calvin blew the play.

It’s either an out if that boy is wrong about Calvin being on the other team, or interference (and possibly a dead ball) if he’s right. If Calvin’s team is up at bat, he’s not a fielder (just a guy in the field), and therefore that’s not counted as a catch.
