I always think of Claudine Longet singing “A Bushel and a Peck”.

If that is the kind of mathematics they were teaching around the time of this cartoon, then it’s no wonder the USA has fallen behind.

Still using the archaic system? We’re still riding with Timmy Martin on the way to school and reciting the whole mess? Try the metric system, to which we were supposed to convert in 1976.

To which industry did convert, but the public did not, you guys still have pennies lol, that says a lot about you.

And we all know who Hobbes is thinking of in panel three…

Thank heavens for a peck. I don’t think that Peter Piper picking a quarter bushel of pickled peppers has the same ring to it.

I’m afraid that the definition of bushel is incorrect.

A bushel is a unit of volume, not weight.

A bushel of corn weighs 56 pounds, whereas, a bushel of cranberries weighs 33 pounds.

My Grandfather used to say, “You’ve got to eat a peck of dirt before you die.”

But Hobbes understands something from smooch!!

Peck, unit of capacity in the U.S. Customary and the British Imperial Systems of measurement. In the United States the peck is used only for dry measure and is equal to 8 dry quarts, or 537.6 cubic inches (8.810 litres).

That or a stroke or bite by a bird with its beak…

I believe a bushel is 3 pecks, not 4. But I didn’t google it, so….

Calvin’s math book gets one thing wrong, though: it’s a measure of volume, not weight. Calvin’s conclusion is spot on, either way.

Kudos to everyone who quickly pointed out that a bushel and peck are measures of volume, not weight. Reminds me of that standard 6th grade teacher joke: “Class, which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?”

Just a couple of months ago Calvin did not understand 5+3, now bushel and pecks conversion?

I never like those math problems either. Yet I heard of love a bushel and a peck, which is a lot of love.

A peck is a measure of volume, not weight. One peck equals two dry gallons.

I always thought a Bushel was a Volumetric measure.

I think it’s English that’s the problem.

I remember this particular comic about the peck and Calvin’s total confusion from its first publication and still find it funny.

I once saw five peccaries in the wild and called them a bushel and a peccary.

Since Hobbes advocates the use of invisible numbers, would there be invisible bushels and pecks to consider here?!

I never really learned what bushels and pecks were for measuring when I was kid. Back when this strip first appeared, they were trying to get us to learn the metric system, not these arcane units of measure.
