Last time this strip was reprinted, a commentator wondered what anyone in the strip who was watching Calvin would see. I presume they would see Hobbes as a stuffed doll lying on the ground and Calvin strolling up to him and pressing his head against the stuffed doll’s face. They would wonder what Calvin was imagining and they wouldn’t be able to see or hear Hobbes yawn. They would also miss the marvellous look on Hobbes’s face at the end.
I’ve just been reading the replies to the comments that I made on Tuesday. Connie Shearer tells me that she is amazed at how I keep my position that Hobbes is not a figment of Calvin’s imagination. As I explained on Tuesday, I did start out thinking that the stuffed Hobbes was the real Hobbes and that the real Hobbes was imaginary. I gradually began to question this because of how well Hobbes is characterised and because he is shown the same way on the rare times when he is all alone. What finally convinced me that Calvin does not imagine the things that Hobbes does was Bill Watterson’s comment about feeling Hobbes is “more real than any kid could make up.” I think that this shows that Watterson didn’t try to limit Hobbes to Calvin’s imagination.
Ever see a cat yawn and look inside its mouth? That cavity accounts for about 90% of the volume of its skull, with eyes, nose, and ears taking up another 9%. Figure out for yourself what that leaves for the brain.

THAT couldn’t have tasted very nice! The lengths that Calvin goes to to avoid taking a bath – that head is surely filthy!
