In a small rural school, students who continually were absent or who took 3 years to escape one grade were described as taking the scenic route or wanting to experience a deeper level of study.
First day out, I met an eighth grader who was 6’ 2", 180 lbs and 16 years old. Anybody think I was going to give him grief about his homework?
Near the end of my teaching career, the emphasis on grades was getting ridiculous. Parents were getting almost to the point of wanting daily updates… and they didn’t care what the kids were actually learning as long as the grades looked good.
Letter grades mostly reflect effort, not knowledge or ability. It doesn’t matter to me which passing grade my kids get, but if they aren’t passing, then something is very wrong.
My brother once brought home a less than stellar report card. When Dad asked him about it, he got a flip answer. Dad aimed a kick at him, missed, and broke his toe when he hit the leg of a kitchen chair instead. They both got a laugh out of it, but not until much later.
I know this is just a comic strip, but I don’t understand why some parents make such a big deal about stuff like grades. While getting an education and doing well in school is certainly important, but there’s so much more to life than just that.

Schools tell you how do you will affect the rest of your life. I had self-esteem issues for years until I was told that was a lie.

I wonder what Calvin’s report cards were like in kindergarten.

Calvin, with grades like these, you’ll still be in first grade thirty years from now!

We had a guy in my Senior HS Class That just couldn’t make it. When he reached 21 they cut him . He was drafted 3 months later. Never saw him again.

Remember how yesterday Calvin was asking for practice semesters? He might get them.

Maybe if they replaced that yawn of a teacher with someone who can understand Calvin’s imaginative mind-wanderings and employ them to actual learning…

Love how in the third panel, Calvin knows his dad is not going to be amused by the report card, so he gives his “best little boy in the world” look.

Calvin needs to actually try his hardest for that statement to be legitimate.

Maybe Mom or Dad could help in showing Calvin how to organize and reviewing his class notes with him before getting started?
