The name hamburger confused me as a kid, because I assumed that since cheeseburgers have cheese in them, hamburgers must be made of ham. But instead, they’re beef, and named after the city of Hamburg like Calvin mention.
So…should we rename them to beefburgers, or just drop the “burger” suffix for other types of sandwich?
i just recently stopped eating red meat. but i eat one of those vegetable based brands until i learn to make something myself.. i like the burger experience. The chomp into it. i think the one i like is Beyond Meat, legume (pea) based, and i use lots of soysauce and oil to get it to the meat side lol
When JFK visited West Berlin he declared Ich bin ein Berliner which he thought meant “I am a Berliner” but actually meant “I am a jelly donut”. Somebody joked that it was a good thing he wasn’t visiting Hamburg.
The meat product was so called by 1880 (as hamburg steak); if it was named for the German city no certain connection has ever been put forth, and there may not be one unless it be that Hamburg was a major port of departure for German immigrants to United States. An 1809 account of life and manners in Iceland says meat smoked in the chimney there is referred to as Hamburg beef.
I’m Icelandic, and I’ve never heard of that reference (it is, after all, over 200 years old, and not many houses have chimneys any more), but today, we call smoked pork loins “Hamburger loin”.
All the evidence shows consuming meat makes people gain weight and have increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Just the facts. You’re okay, Calvin. Meat is truly crap.
We were once invited to a friend’s home for Easter dinner where both lamb & ham were being served. I asked my daughters if they wanted to try lamb & they both did (I don’t like lamb, myself; I stuck with the ham). After they had some & liked it I asked them if they realized what it was & they did. That’s my little carnivores!
Mom should have just gone with the flow and said of course it is, and that’s Frankfurters made from people from Frankfurt. Germans are nothing if not innovative.
I thought Calvin already knew hamburgers were made from cows? And he has minimal fuss eating other meats, often imagining himself as a carnivorous dinosaur or other predator…

Poor mom. She’ll look old before her time raising Calvin. Calvin would probably eat his burger if it were made out of people in Hamburg.

You know, Mom… Maybe if you’re less strict and stingy with Calvin and let him have fun like play video games, maybe he would not behave this way!

Calvin was OK with the hamburger when he thought it was made of people, but not when he learned it was made from cows.

The problem there Calvin is that cows eat grass. Technically, you’re a secondhand vegan. I can live with that.

In general, once you see how any particular food is being made (or where it comes from), you’ll probably never want to eat it again.
