Susieâs reaction to Calvin in todayâs strip reminds me of an early story arc in which she was hurt by one of Calvinâs insults and said to Mr Bun, âI wish I had a million friends so that I wouldnât care about Calvin.â She then added, âAs long as Iâm dreaming, I wish I had a pony.â
Calvin was feeling guilty that time about Susie being hurt rather than angry so he ended up apologising to her. This time, he doesnât feel guilty as she is not hurt by him but angry with him which is what he wants.
Another thing that I like about todayâs wonderful reprint â from one of my favourite story arcs â is the first panel. Youâll see that Calvin is speaking to Hobbes in small letters which indicate that he is speaking quietly. He is also facing away from Susie. This suggests that Calvin really is speaking to Hobbes rather than pretending to speak to Hobbes when really wanting Susie to hear him.
I often feel bad for Susie when Calvinâs performative cruelty gets to her. But then I also wonder why sheâs expecting anything different at this point. Unless heâs often pleasant toward her offstage?
One of my favorite lines from Susie came after Calvin had listed the bad qualities of girls and ended, âSeriously why would you want to be a girl?â or something like that. Susieâs response was âThe thought of a jerk like you begging one of us for a date when youâre 16.âAnother notable line came after Calvin complained about the need to live up to âmanlyâ expectations. Susie replied, âOn the other hand, boys arenât expected to live their lives 20 pounds underweight.â

In the third panel, it looks like Suzieâs cooties jumped ship, heading for a more appealing host.

In a comic strip, staying six forever is funny.
As we can observe from some of the commenters, in real life, remaining six forever is just sad.

Susie, just remember the wise words of Groucho Marx â ââI refuse to join any club that would have me as a memberâ.

When boys get older, they start a secret club with just one girl. Sometimes that club lasts a lifetime.
