Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for October 20, 2012
Transcript:
Toni: "Hey, you two! How'd it go?" Shannon: "We're washing puzzles!" Toni: "What fun!" Luann: "No. Not fun. Doesn't this girl drive you NUTS?" Toni: "Yes, that's why you got her for 2 hours so I could go play with Brad. See how I'm happy now and you're not?" Luann: "I SO need a boyfriend" Shannon: "Look at me!"

Two hours is not a lot of time, but if Toni is happy…

The big clue for us adults: Toni’s shirt bottom button was buttoned when she dropped Shannon off. Très Risqué!
Mighty_Mouse about 12 years ago
And there are still people who believe that these two characters are not partaking of an adult relationship. That’s after quite explicit “clues” in the form of dialog, including Nancy insisting Brad use protection. If they just wanted a chat, no babysitter would have been organised with such blessed urgency. I think some people on this comments page have lived lives without passion.

sure greg…“playing” I see what you did there…

The time has passed for this comment, but yesterday I got into write-a-tome mode and posted it for the day before (?), too late for anyone else to see, so I’m reposting it:True confession – I read a page or two of comments, but not all. However, I’d like to put my two cents’ worth in. (I do realize this is a comic strip, but similar scenes are often played out in real life.) We knew a couple of married couples, community-college teachers, who each adopted a little girl to round out their families. (One family already had two boys, the other two boys and a girl.) The newborn daughter of Family #1 turned out to have bipolar disorder; the other, who was also a baby when adopted, had severe behavior problems and wound up in an institution. Both are in their forties now, and have improved. The other children turned out fine, with no significant problems. No amont of beatings or otherwise inflicted pain could have straightened out these girls. As far as we could see, both families loved their adopted girls and tried to treat them the same as their other kids. (We also know kids who were adopted and turned out fine.) There are too many variables involved to make a dogmatic comment without being familiar with the situation.[End of comment] Thank you. Now go on with your comments regarding today’s strip.

I am happy to see Toni “happy,” and I feel confident that Brad is also. As for Shannon—that child is in more need of more serious help than Luann can provide. Luann, in any case, needs to work on getting a boyfriend—maybe Quill, maybe not, but someone—so she can do some growing up (as Greg has hinted at in his blog).

Sometimes I wonder if Shannon’s mom is actually dead, and that’s why nobody’s seen or heard from her in forever. Learning about her mother’s death could easily cause the sort of behavior Shannon exhibits. There’s no substitute for a mom, after all.
Angelalex242 about 12 years ago
Also, I discovered a better idea for disciplining Shannon then beating her ass with the nearest wooden implement.
I think I’d have had her help wash ‘puzzles’ more, and then make her hold the poor abused dog until she finally felt a spark of empathy in her cold, nearly dead heart. Dogs can sometimes be a form of therapy, even for grown adults.

Heh, heh, heh . . . she said “play” . . . heh, heh, heh . . . I know what she meant . . . heh, heh, heh . . .
imbaldeagle about 12 years ago
“play” what an ambiguous term – leaves a lot to the imagination. Generally involves hands and movements – perhaps toys – at least. Goals reached, at least in part. Yeah, with Toni this happy, I’m thinkin’ she just might be ready to consider marriage… And Luann sounds/looks like she’s about to take boys a little more seriously.
NobleRunner about 12 years ago
Does anybody else see an adoption in the works (post or coincident with a marriage) for Toni and Brad?

You know, it was interesting to have read some of comments on little Shannon this week. A few months ago when she darn near CHEWED Ann Effiel’s hand off, everybody thought it was “CUTE”. NOW, that little monster attacked Puddles, everyone wants her HEAD.

I’m just wondering when that child will get some discipline.
Cajtri87 about 12 years ago
What is up with all “did they do something?” It isn’t a huge deal that they have a normal adult relationship that he doesn’t explain in full detail. Yeesh. This week was just about Luann having a bad night babysitting. I don’t think it needs to be over analyzed.
Thehag about 12 years ago
Tony,Luann! Shannon is right there, she can hear you. Don’t you think maybe that sort of talk is better left out of her hearing? There is often a reason kids act out, conversations like this only compound the problem.
Yes you all, I know it’s a cartoon.

I so hoped Luann would teach the brat a thing or two…

Folker, “making out” relieves stress better than first-time sex & is more appropriate use of two hours. Overnight, or six hour, I’d go with the sex obsessors.
Has everyone forgotten Quill? Or is Luann going to remember that sex could lead to Shannon 2?

I SO AGREE WITH SEAFOX10! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS TO SEE TONI IN A STRING BIKINI! GREG, WHERE IS YOUR COMPASSION TO YOUR VIEWERS AND MORE THAN JUST US TWO WANT THE SAME THING! WILL YOU INDULGE US, PLEASE!

Future mothers of the year. I KNOW it’s just a comic strip, but you don’t criticize a kid this way in front of them.
9thCapricorn about 12 years ago
Really, Shannon is not that bad. My boys were way more active – more like Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes or Hammie from “Baby Blues.” Come on, Greg. Learn a thing or two from these boys and do a Shannon makeover. Shannon is rather tame – just mouthful. Spilled soda on Puddles? That’s all?
marvee about 12 years ago
Agree with: (1) We don’t need the details of Brad and Toni’s relationship. This is a family strip that appears in newspapers.(2) It was inappropriate for Toni and Luann to talk about Shannon in front of her. (3) Shannon is not a monster; she’s a normal child who needs more consistent love and discipline than she is getting. I can also sympathize with Toni and Brad. Adults need some time of their own to “relax”, whatever.Luann did so much better with Shannon the last time she babysat.

I hope at some point Shannon straightens up and flies right. If she ever gets a boot to the back side it ought to be one of Toni’s big, heavy steel-toed firefighter boots.(Assuming none of the evaluations show a disorder.)

Toni was honest about wanting relief from my favorite brat.-We all need a little help from our friends. People with such a child to handle need to have many friends.

I’m wondering if maybe Greg is planning for Toni to apply to be Shannon’s guardian (Which, if she finally marries Brad would force him into an “instant family” situation)
CasuallyObservant about 12 years ago
Shannon has continued to exhibit sociopathic tendencies and I think it is no longer funny or cute. She has no remorse or kindness or empathy, only entitlement and anger. It is worrisome especially at her age. Greg – please address this behavior in this character and get her some help. Also, can we please move on with the Quill needing to talk story and Toni & Brad getting married??

Go back to Oct 10…Toni’s blouse had four buttons, now three. Wonder how she lost a button?
belldee90 about 12 years ago
i can hardly believe that people speculate on the off-panel behavior of two cartoon characters. It is a testament to the author that people are anthropomorphizing ink and paint.

I still say Puddles should give Shannon a great big CHOMP! Kinda like the one Shannon gave Ann Eiffel when she took her crown away.
