Yes, I do think that Paul hammered together a new religion out of existing elements the same way that Joseph Smith and Mohammed did with their new religions. Christianity seems to be a combination of Judaism and the Greek mystery cults I think that Jesus lived and died a Jew and never thought he was some sort of deity. I say some sort, because the trinity makes no sense to me. It’s sort of like keeping monotheism and still getting another god to work with. For a lot of people monotheism and monogamy are admirable principles, but a little boring.

Actually, no.[]Utah was the second territory in the nation to give women the right to vote (behind Wyoming by just a few months), and Salt Lake City itself was a hub for the suffrage movement.[]However, in the 1870s the federal government passed a law stripping women in Utah of the right to vote. The “Mormon Women” bloc was so fearsome and unpredictable that Washington basically decided to destroy what they couldn’t control.

I am profoundly saddened when any particular religion is singled out for bashing. I think that they all should be bashed equally. @DTThe Pew pole was the only major one that has Romney ahead. Obama is still favored in most of the others, although his lead seems to have been reduced a bit.

More religion bashing by the Liberal press and not a word about it in the “fair and balanced” media. Why am I not surprised. Liberals are all against bigotry, unless it suits their purposes.

I would say that Doonesbury as a strip is liberal.

And since Mormons are a conservative religious group, I would say that yes, they could be more prone to child sexual abuse than some other groups.

Many conservative religious groups seem to advocate the “spare the rod, spoil the child” philosophy.

Yesterday, Charlie Fuqua, running for Arkansas House of Reps, advocated killing rebellious children, by quoting Deuteronomy 21:18-21. Charlie also believes that Muslims and liberals are the anti-christ. And, oh yes, Charlie is a conservative Republican as well as a conservative Christian. We have many examples (far too many) of crazy right wingers around these days.

Aye, fair enough, but I was trying to draw out there may be a distinction between the forms of faith or magic :) And it’s hardly like Mormonism is singled out for critique or criticism here or elsewhere. So Mr. Blair need not be trying to counter every perceived slight on Mormons here – a pointless endeavour that merely invites more criticism. I do try to be respectful of other faiths – much like politics, it shouldn’t be a war, merely a debate, and an agreement that folks won’t always (if ever!) agree.

Obama never denied having had a rebellious youth. He also did not vote to deny aid to NO. His statements to a group in NO at that time were well reported and rather innocuous.

White (founder of the Seventh-day Adventist religion). She, like Paul, differs from Mohammad and Smith in that she definitely did not work alone. She dropped out of school in the third grade because of a physical injury to her face by a rock thrown by a classmate. She had visions. Her greatest helper was her husband, who married her at her age of 17. Like the earliest Christians (all Jews), she thought Jesus was going to come on October 22, 1844, and so wrote (scribbled) down only her visions (preserved in her Early Writings compilations, heavily heavily edited).πNot wanting to get into too much detail: My point is that she was more like Paul in having help in synthesizing a new religion.

Oops, I just remembered. Mohammad was also illiterate. He dictated his visions. (I don’t know much about the origin of Islam, so would appreciate some input here, as long as it is based on scholarship.)

NOTE: If I have indulged in Mormon bashing, I hereby repent and recant. As has been point out here a number of times, all religions have elements that can be easily “bashed” by those who don’t agree. I thought Wyoming got it in the 1870s?[]Either way, women in Utah could vote in the 1870s. This ended when the government slipped a provision into the anti-polygamy laws.

I see a conservative poster a little while ago trotted the old Wyoming and Utah were the first to give women the right to vote in 1869 argument. Whoop de do! And women in the rest of the country received the right to vote in 1920. I think this is what is called water under the bridge, since it is now 2012. True, there are other issues in terms of voting, but this does not relate to women voting in 2012. Instead, it relates to voting for elderly, poor, blacks and college students, many of whom do not have driver’s licenses. Oh, and what else do those groups have in common? Of course, I know that the conservative poster was trying to say that Mormons aren’t so anti-woman because Wyoming and Utah were the first places where women were allowed to vote. There is more to having equal rights than voting, although voting is important. Reproductive rights are also important. Equal pay for equal work is also important. I am afraid that there a lot of things that we have to look out for in terms of women’s rights.

Sarah points out in her hilarious video that if you have a gun permit, that is acceptable ID, but not a student ID or a veteran’s ID card. Wow.

Blacks were not allowed in the Mormon church until 1978. I don’t see this as making them pioneers of civil rights. They also practiced polygamy as of only a few generations ago. Some might see this as a great situation for women, I disagree.

The Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, is a prophet FOR Mormons only, and even then only for those who believe it. The exact same thing is true for Seventh-day Adventists. The SDA prophet, Ellen G. White, is a prophet FOR SDAs only, and even then only for those who believe it. The identical definition would also be true of Mary Baker Eddy, prophet of the Christian Scientists. Whether or not such a prophet can/could foretell the is simply irrelevant (in a scientific or historocritical sense). In the Bible the definition of a prophet is “one who speaks for God”, and not (necessarily) one who foretells the future.

The SDA church, worldwide at around 17 million members, is far larger than the LDS church worldwide. The numbers in North America, however, are reversed, with the Mormons at around 6 million and the Adventists at around 1 million. This explains, in part, the reason why Mormons are so much more better known (and criticized) than are Adventists.

All the debunking in the world won’t trump Rush & Fox.

Joseph Smith may have been an abolitionist, but we have to consider more recent history, as in the last 50 years anyway. Actually, I would have been a Republican if I had been born in 1845. The GOP has changed rather dramatically since Abe Lincoln was prez. Now there is a Republican I would have been happy to support…

Correction: I checked: LDS worldwide baptized membership is less than 15 million, while the SDA is more than 16 million. SDA not as much larger than than the LDS as my previous post indicated.

Like I said, if Abe could just rise up from the dead, I would support him. This is 2012 and we are in a completely different world, thank goodness.
