Tarawa — an interesting last name for the George Takei character. Tarawa is an atoll in the South Pacific that was the scene of the first major Allied offensive against Japan in November 1943. 19,000 Marines charged one of the most heavily defended spots in the world. A truly horrific three day battle, as the Japanese literally fought to the last man (of the 4500 Japanese defenders, only 17 survived):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3ce-hreP-whttp://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/tarawa.htm
Nice touch of humor with poor Lee going through those musty, dusty old files! And we’re actually seeing some detective work here: that’s good.…………………Willy007, can you reduce the size of your images? They’re so big that the administrators will for sure be taking them down….
Good morning, VistaBill! Wowzer, this is a way to do a Sunday. George T. as the expert, oversized Moon Maid pictures, and a history lesson (Thanks, Willy007).
Great to see Mr. Sulu! What a lark to have him in the story. I look forward to seeing how he helps Tracy with this case. By the way, has anyone noticed Moon Maid is beautiful and sexy? Yeah, I thought you did.
I’m willing to bet that Takei’s appearance came out of his Archie’s comic involvement (& Mike’s possible connection there) but wondering if he’s paid for his “appearance”? How does SAG handle something like that? Or does it? Is Takei considered a public figure & his likeness is fair play? Or is there some wiggle room here as the character in the strip has a different name?
Great to see George & Brad in one of the classic comic ctrips of all time. Thanks to Joe Staton & Mike Curtis. Great idea. Also a special thanks to K.O.A.M. Howard!!!
Part of his involvement is due to the (semi?) autobiographical play, Allegiance. I do know that about 2 weeks ago he mentioned that he will be in Dick Tracy doing a storyline based on the internment camps.
Geez, can’t you people shut up with the Moonmaid stuff? You’ll see her when you see her…personally, I hope she turns out to be a fake, and is never seen again
public figure n. in the law of defamation (libel and slander), a personage of great public interest or familiarity like a government official, politician, celebrity, business leader, movie star, or sports hero. Incorrect harmful statements published about a public figure cannot be the basis of a lawsuit for defamation unless there is proof that the writer or publisher intentionally defamed the person with malice (hate).
Thanks for the information, Ray. Something I’ve always been curious about whether President Obama showing up in an issue of Amazing Spider-Man or an actor featured in his own comic like Jerry Lewis. But in this instance it looks like Takei is “cast” as a character…it’s his likeness & I suspect a semi-autobiographical portrait that’s being utilized. Didn’t know if that fell under union jurisdiction or managerial.
Shatner did 1-man Broadway show last year, Takei this year. Interesting! (I just watched an hour Stern segment w/ Shatner in studio, Takei on the phone. Hooboy. No love lost there.)
I have known of this storyline for about two or three weeks, thanks to MMM whom also shares a web site with me. I wanted to thank you gentlemen for having a homosexual male couple, to be in the strip, instead of the stereotypical lesbian couple. This shows far more class, and maturity and I for one welcome this highly. I came upon this strip only recently; and I understand Mr. Locher nearly destroyed the strip. You have restored it to Mr. Gould’s glory. I cannot say if he would have supported George, and Brad’s appearance in it but I and I believe many also do. Good work, gentlemen! I hope to one day be able to thank you in person. Give Mr. Takei, and his husband my best, and thanks for appearing.
Any natural man has to like foxy chicks like MM, no matter how old you are. Either Mikeyj is a little feminine and doesn’t like sexy women or he is intimidated. It is really okay to be like that so long as you aint a hypocrite or phony.
Just because someone is timid, gay or does not like women doesn’t make them a bad person. Those kind keep the bad dogs on the porch.I am not a gay-basher, and I am not feminine, just a natural real man. Now, do not take offence just because I told what was on my mind. A little controversy can be fun. lol
Hey Russco, I happen to be 100% straight, only interested in women, but, come on, everyday, the same broken record! If anyone is being abnormal, it’s a bunch of grown men, apparently love sick, pining for a cartoon character
Love today’s art – including the small monitors in the MCU office showing the lake and the exposed buildings in panel 2 – and of course George Takei’s appearance. And I’m really enjoying the story. But – patron saint of ARCHERS? Somebody’s got a sick sense of humor.
Read this strip religiously as a kid. Haven’t thought about it in years. I follow George Takei on Facebook and he posted that they were starting a storyline with a character based on him
@Mikeyj – you know I was always wondering about this Moonmaid over-excitement – and yeah it is a bit annoying and somewhat disturbing to observe – but as with anything on the Internet, one CAN simply ride into Ignoreland.
…..so depictions of male homosexual couples are far classier than those of lesbian couples? Sorry, can’t let that slide by without asking if that isn’t a little insulting to the latter?
I’m pretty much indifferent to the Moon Maid business. I saw parts of it in 1964, thought it was silly and boring, and lost interest in Dick Tracy because of it. It’s part of the DT heritage, though, so there it is.
I’m hoping that when the MM story resumes, there’s a plausible explanation for the existence of the lunar civilization and its disappearance (I know a scientifically accurate one is impossible, but I’ll buy one that at least takes a stab at explaining how you can have a breathable atmosphere in a lunar valley.)
