Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 05, 2013
Transcript:
Joanie: No, I'm not the senator's mother. Woman: Oh... sorry. Then who are you, ma'am? Joanie: I'm Joanie Caucus. I just joined the staff. Woman: No kidding? I should have guessed that. Joanie: And why's that? Woman: Well, Senator Warren is very strong on diversity! Joanie: Diversity? Woman: The elderly are people, too. She gets that.

If that brunette was a man, Joanie would have decked him.

Oh Sister ! You have just put your young foot in it ! If you wish to continue living in your idealistic youthful bubble, youâd best shut up. You donât realize what a riled Joanie Caucus will do to you. She will show you what a true Gray Panther is !!

So an Intern is about to get choked, good to know.
Cofyjunky about 12 years ago
Okay, this newbie-know-nothing has got to go. Even interns are expected to be schooled in politics. If this is Washington, D.C. that this storyline is happening in, then this assistant doesnât seem to get that thereâs âbinders full of womenâ willling to clamor for her job. Her âI-donât-need-to-know-anyone-whoâs-not-hotâ attitude is more befitting for working the velvet rope of a club.

Oh, my, this girl is quite incompetent. First, she mistakes Joanie for the Senatorâs mother (apparently unaware that her bossâ mother is dead), then she insults her for being âold.â Iâm sure the Senator can find better staff than that.
MiepR about 12 years ago
She had red hair yesterday. Garry!!!
George Alexander about 12 years ago
No, itâs the same one, wearing identical duds, and if you go back to yesterdayâs GoComics, sheâs now got brown hair.

Isnât Liz Warren in her sixties?

The young know everthing, anyone over 30 is completely clueless. Every teenager knows this.

wasnât she a red head originally?
brick10 about 12 years ago
Yes, Sen. Warren is big on diversity. She hires the young and stupid.

The comments today leave me with the feeling that a lot of older folks forget what it was like to be in their 20âs.

Joanie should sic the Gray Panthers on this nitwit!
magicwalnut about 12 years ago
In my twenties, I used to stand in the grocery line thinking, âOh, no! Iâm right behind some little old lady fumbling around in her change purse!â In my seventies, I stand there behind thinking,âOh, no! I hope thereâs no one behind me in a hurry while Iâm fumbling around in my change purse!â Oh now oneâ s perspective changes! Or not.
flyfisher about 12 years ago
@MiepRI just clicked back to yesterdayâs and the hair is brown!
gaebie about 12 years ago
Seriously, didnât Joanieâs and my generation say the same about older people when we getting involved in politics 40 years ago? (and the answer is âYESâ) payback hurts..You might want to remind that little tart just WHO wrote Elizabethâs speach!

Morons are people, too, which accounts for how the intern got there.

Of course, diversity in the workplace leads to mediocrity in the workplace. I always tried to get the very best people to work for me and not necessarily a person from every category the government could dream up.
summerdog86 about 12 years ago
What professional would ever hire such a tactless bunch of people for their office to talk to the public? And, JoanieâŠyou need to get a stylist, pronto. And maybe a vat of Avonâs anti-aging products for the face and neck.

I know someone who spoke to older folks this way and with that stupid down talking âvoiceâ. She herself is now older but instead of seeing how she was, she now treats young folks as if they are idiots.

Re: The red hair vs. the brown. This is intriguing. I dug up yesterdayâs Tampa Bay Times, and the young twitâs hair was blazing red, as it was in GoComics when I first looked at it yesterday. I just looked at the Monday GoComics strip again, and presto-chango, the hair was brown! In the Monday comments, @MiepR said something about the red hair early on. Then someone else told Miep that it was brown. (I donât recall looking back at the strip again â whoâd expect it to change?) So wha hoppen? Was Garry playing a little joke on us?
mistercatworks about 12 years ago
Definitely an âouchâ moment. At the age of 60, Iâm having to get used to the idea of young people offering to help me get up any time I am lower than chair level.

People try to put us down.Talking âbout my generation.Just because we get around.Talking âbout my generation.Things they do look awful cold.Talkingâ âbout my generation.Yeah, I hope I die before I get old.Talking âbout my generation.âPete Townsend (This opinion may not be operative at the current point in time.)

The question âDid she take her medication this morningâ is always asked before surgery, not afterward. Therefore, it is probable they were treating her like an idiot before any anesthesia was administered. Not to mention the fact that many day surgeries use milder forms that allow the patient to be fully alert within an hour.

Issac Asimov once penned a limerick dealing with such a situation. I cannot quote the whole piece, but I think the ending fits perfectly, â⊠with one blow I killed that rotten kid.â

Joanie might be thinking of these immortal words from Maltby and Shire:
âAnd these sweet young things who hire me now,These MBAs making fifty thou,*Who smile and ask what I have done,When THEY GOT THEIR JOBS THROUGH THE FIGHTS I WON!â

Youâre young and youâre guy; sheâs old and just a woman.
A speaker on gender issues, youthful and pretty, described being interviewed by a bank which was trying to âbreakâ the glass ceiling that was maintaining an all-male high echelon. Every question and statement made by the bank representative was directed to the young man with her as her assistant, even when he repeatedly redirected the statement to his boss. This is the mindset that goes unrecognized in many if not most conversations in which the female is the relevant authoritty and the male an assistant.Rickapolis about 12 years ago
