Now that he’s in the paper and been seen by many, this may be the last bold wide open “public” crime for the Jumbler. He kind of stands out in a crowd, ya think?
I suppose Tracy wants to find out just how much the newspaper and its reporter really know and if they have any good photos (like the page one shot) of the Jumbler and his four-legged accomplice.Very iconic panel 3, with Tracy snapping down his fedora and Sam lighting up his ciggy.
Smoking? And they took Montana Joe’s tobacco away. Today’s environment? I’m having a dickens of a time figuring out when this is taking place. Police cars look to be 60s vintage, 70s at the latest. The train that took out Sweatbox was late 50s, possibly a steamer. We are tracking Montana Joe’s radio show that may have occurred in the 40s. Oh, yes, and this “batty” villain is using “U Tube” (YouTube)? Dick Tracy must be a lot smarter than I am because I sure can’t figure any of this out.
Very well drawn today with vibrant colors!!! Kudos!!! Is it ok if I ask what that is in panel two with the pictures of Jumbler on them? TV screens? Computer monitors? Surveillance pictures? Just wondering. Hope I don’t offend anyone, not my intention. Sorry if I did.
Good morning everyone. What a wonderful day today is. Regarding Sam’s smoking I wonder if this board is the appropriate forum to express an opinion regarding it. Pro or Con risks offending someone which is something we all should deplore and avoid.
Hi Gweedo, I wonder if your choice of the word “BEAT” and it’s violent implication is appropriate. You may want to reconsider using it in the future. Hope my comment hasn’t offended you, not my intention.
I am truly amazed! I have finally seen Sam /lighting up!/, instead of having one hanging from his mouth constantly.
I can only imagine what it is like to be in that room. I just came from a small convenient shop, with a 5 booth restaurant. It /reeked of smoke and I had problems breathing. At least I am not asthmatic.
My comment on the smoking, as I have said before, is to use the electric ones. The smoker (steamer?), gets a hot gas going inside his/her throat and lungs, still gets the nicotine, and has the ability to create a range of tastes that real cigarettes can’t even come close to. And, the best part, can smoke them indoors, even at their office desk. The people around him/her smell almost nothing, they just see steam coming out of the smokers mouth which is no worse than your average iron being used, and maybe a hint of whatever flavoring the person is using. Mmmm… Carmel Cappuccino my favorite. It is also non carcinogenic, so no second hand smoke problems.
No I don’t use them, but I have met some people who are major fans.Maybe Sam will switch?
You’ll have to go a good deal further to offend me old pal !
..
Well Gweedo am I relieved to hear that! I would never want to hurt someone’s feelings with my words, that’s for sure. By the way, is Sam giving Tracy the finger with his right hand in panel three? Just wondering if he finds going to the newspaper annoying. If I offended anyone who works at a newspaper please know that was not my intention.
Mayor Armstrong once again gets draw (no pun intended) into the story. I realize there’s a legitimate reason for her to be mentioned but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I think she has her finger in some unsavory pies.
Even Chester Gould ran into problems occasionally when his readers perceived his strip running contrary to the real world. The most famous example is the great commotion stirred up all across the country when people began to ask: How is Tracy able to afford a late model Cadillac and a Frank Lloyd Wright style house on a cop’s salary? He addressed those issues in his story telling.Today, everybody knows that smoking just isn’t done in public places like Police HQ, and it doesn’t ring true when we see Sam lighting up. Plus, the reality is that smoking stinks, and all of Sam’s co-workers would be going home every night with their clothes and hair smelling disgusting.Sam is such a likeable, dependable character, and some of us (at least) would like to see him quit, in the context of good story telling.Sure, Dick Tracy is a comic strip, but it always has addressed real-world issues, except, of course, for the jaunts to the moon.I like Sam a lot, but, if I worked with him in real life, I’d be going home each night with a severe headache, because cigarette smoke affects me very adversely.
…..so security is so lax there an old man with a little tear gas can walk off with THAT kind of cash? Stretches the belief……….and so does people upset about kids reading the strip and seeing smoking as a no-no…but gruesome murders, oh….that’s just fine, lol.
In Kentucky, north east region. But I believe it applies (only for now) for the number of patriots. As I said, there was about 5 booths total. Also I believe the law is changing.

Considering the anti-tobacco social environment of today -especially in the workplace – why would Sam be smoking?
