Storm,On bullets it just depends on material and the size and weight of the bullet. I have seen a 5.56mm bullet defected by a small branch about the size of a pencil. Bounce off car doors. The bullet needs weight to penetrate what we call “hard” surfaces. Like one said these seem to be 22 cal size but a 5.56 is just about 22cal size. The bullet however is heavier at 55 grains versus 20 to 25 grains for the 22.That is why choice of cover versus what caliber the weapon is always a necessary decision. AK 7.62 rounds rip car doors no time flat. 5.56 if head on maybe if it hits nothing else.Bullets do unusual things. Physics, environment, objects all influence what a bullet will do.My favorite was a YouTube video of a person firing a 50 cal Barrett rifle at a metal plate 200 yards away. It was one inch thick. He was using the BMG round which is a full metal jacket 760 grain bullet. That round does NOT penetrate. Instead it comes back and you can hear it spinning in the air and strikes his protective head phones shattering the right ear piece. He should know to penetrate thick plate you need ARMOR piercing rounds not the BMG hard ball.
Darwinskeeper You make a good point. I too have thought that. Back in earlier stories like when Wally entered there was police. They admonished him for taking matters into his own hand. What may be here is the Police have been not necessarily removed but are not “allowed” to do their jobs except to take paperwork and reports. No patrol, walking the beat so to say. The High Council could have decided (in their favor) the Security Rats would be better. Its SORT of like Mexico. The local police have little power to get things done. Most locals don’t even listen to them. But the Federales the Federal Police those guys are not to be messed with. A YouTube video I saw pointed that out. A citizen came up and grabbed an officer who was wearing FULL tactical gear and carrying a 40mm grenade gun loaded with RUBBER balls (Riot round). That officer just pushed him back and fired that weapon right into his chest. Lesson here. Don’t grab the officer.
in the end collapse of society isn’t caused by “deviant” behavior, but by backlash from those who tried to deny people their rights to engage in that behavior.

Got a thought on the gun and ammo thing. Though Arron likely just drew a “gun thingy” rather than having a solid design in mind, what he did can be rationalized. The ammo is likely a pistol size case, say 9mm or smaller, but firing a rather large and long bullet, a bit overkill for human to smaller targets, but just what you need for massive destruction in monsters. Small fast bullets can have some dramatic hydrostatic effects, potentially creating massive soft tissue injuries. Big long slugs can smash exotic exoskelitons or break big bones. A big squishy monster might be able to soak up any number of high velocity hits, depending on its elastic properties, but big tumbling slugs can churn, tear, or smash awful wound channels. And they are lousy for penitrating elevator cabs.
Before the debate over the effects of the classic .223 come up, let me mention that they tend to do one of two things, dump all their energy right away, with the expected dramatic hydrostatic temporary displacement(usually with the bullet tumbling or disintegrating to a full stop right away, which is where all the kinetic energy comes from), or not dump their energy right away, with unpredictable paths of damage and/or over-penitration. This second mode has been made much of, usually as a good thing. However, it is not the best way to stop man or beast, as the bullet is a fairly tiny thing, and doesn’t make much of a hole by itself (without that extra kinetic energy doing other things, it might as well be a .22 LR).
As for the guns, it looks like a generic sub-machine gun, and kind of bulky. A heavier gun might be a bit less handy, but less punishing for a small person to handle the recoil.
But, again, Arron likely just drew a “gun thingy” and we’re making way too much of it.
Surfstuff55,“Is there any Texan born that doesn’t have ‘an interest in firearms’…?”
Why yes. I’m from Houston and I’m one of many Texans that has no interest in firearms…Not all Texans are gun crazy. It’s a widely held but fixed oversimplified image or idea of what Texas and Texan are like.
I wonder how old the rats are. If they’re just a few years old and were born rats instead of being mutants, they may not have the mental maturity to carry guns responsibly.
Yea, it hit me after I wrote that that it is the way up, not out. As for the weapons, they do have an eclectic sort. But black market was big I bet when stocking this place.
Mmm, retribution like this never pans out. The authorities kill one of the mob, the mob kill one of the authorities, the authorities kit up and mow down the mob…
