Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for June 30, 2013
Transcript:
Goat: Where you off to, Pig? Pig: Me and Zebra are going to see a herd of cattle that used to belong to the character 'Hoss' on 'Bonanza'. Goat: What for? Pig: They're super smart. Every member of the herd is a real whiz at doing tricks, communicating, all sorts of stuff. Goat: And they just perform for anyone? Pig: No. You have to bring one deer that the whole herd can eat first. Goat: That's odd. I didn't think cattle normally ate meat. Zebra: Me either. That's why I want to go. Rat: Where you going? Pig: We're off to see the whiz herd. The one-deer-full whiz herd of Hoss. Rat: Ding dong the cartoonist is dead.

Isaac Aasimov wrote a bunch of short stories that ended with punny punch lines, like “A niche in time saves Stein” and “Poly-water duty all the day”.

Your either born liking puns or not, just remember, all you haters, it’s a birth defect, not a mirth defect.

The Dalai Lama went to Peru on a visit, and was given a llama. He decided to have a toy produced (…a Dalai Lama llama dolly…) to sell as a fund-raiser. The marketing people thought it might sell better if they changed it every day, and kept the price low. Thus was the evolution of the “Daily Dollar Dalai Lama Llama Dolly”. Top that, Steve!

@Eagle, I missed the warning (guess I read too many different ‘toons) and I almost had to read aloud before I GOT it ;-P At least it is worth a giggle, unlike today’s CD made me drag out my memory cards of Cuddles (and it is 5 years since she passed).

Loved it !!! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Reading a comic like this is like savoring a fine wine. It demands slow and careful reading from the first panel. A herd of cattle that used to belong to Hoss? This absurd line immediately lets us know that we’re being set up for a major pun. And while there’s almost no chance of figuring out the gag before the last panel, anticipation is itself a pleasure. So I read each panel slowly and carefully, making sure not to miss anything. And the (pun)ch line was well worth waiting for. Great job!

How does he come up with this stuff??? Most of the time I don’t see it coming. Which of course, is half the fun. He has a pun and he’s not afraid to use it. First time Stephen’s heard that today.
