Good grief, Frankā¦ LIGHTEN UP! (And yes, I had two daughters, and I trusted both of them more than Frank seems to trust Luann.)

Frank called Quill a āhunkā? How often does one straight man call another THAT??? (Try never)

Frank will not ever live it down with Luann if he insists on ruining the few hours they get to see each other before Quill goes to camp.

Frank is finally saying āIām ready to trust my daughterāā¦ thatās why he was muttering about the drivingā¦ he is saying he realizes he needs to show some latitude.. even if it will still be the ādad versionāā¦.

And it could be a near āFreudianā, too (I at first took it as just a ādad tacticā)ā¦. Heās at the crossroads, and it seems he started thinking out loud, and wants to show he trusts his daughter, as he mustāve realized that she got him home in one piece, despite his worryingā¦.it would sound like heās saying heās ready, though heās also speaking over top of the subject of dinnerā¦..

My mom use to worry about me doing things that I hadnāt even thought of. Made me wonder what she was like when she was young. Maybe not the pregnant virgin she wanted us to think she was. Iād tell her, we could ādoā before midnight what she thought we would ādoā after midnight. No time limits.

Why would it be a āgood thingā for your daughter NOT to get into drama camp hunky boyfriend or not! Shame on you Frank for letting your foolish parental issues once again smash your daughterās dreams!

Geez, Frank, overall Luannās proven herself pretty responsible. And so has Quill (not all teenaged boys are lecherous). Besides, they told you where theyāll be, and itās only for awhile.

Ah yes. The olā, āDonāt you trust meā, gambit. It ranks right up there with, āDonāt you love meā.
So should the owners of a fireworks factory ātrustā their employees and allow them to smoke while on the job?

I donāt know, I think Luann is pushing it. Whatās wrong with the living room? Why does she need to invite Quill into her bedroom right under her parentās noses? But since they were previously allowed their privacy for hours in Bradās room to make their recordings, I guess this is no differentā¦.
drewpamon over 11 years ago
Luann is responsible? Trust her? Iām sorry what strip do you all read? First of all trusting a teenager about sex is like trusting an alcoholic with a bottle of whiskey. They may intellectually agree that itās a bad idea to drink it but it doesnāt mean they will abstain. Second of all I wouldnāt put it past LuAnn to sleep with quill in an attempt to mark her territory for when he is alone with Tiffany. How many girls tell themselves " if I donāt sleep with him heāll go to someone who will."
Waddling Eagle over 11 years ago
āTrustā is not a value. It is something that is earned by maintaining values and avoiding compromising situations. Luannās announcement is a flat statement that she is not to be trusted.

Gerry Lee over 11 years ago
Itās kind of interesting that itās the middle of the afternoon, Frank and Nancy are both home, and Frank is losing his mind with worry. Asking Frank to trust Luann is fine, but Iād also like to see Luann show a bit of consideration for her poor father.
JayBluE over 11 years ago
I mixed it up a little bitā¦. the week that I was thinking of (12/3-8/12) she still employed her āmom radarā thing, even thenā¦ it was something Frank had said on 12.5 that I had mixed up with herā¦==It seems like this is a new step for Nancy, tooā¦
JayBluE over 11 years ago
Attention, for all who would think that Frank wouldnāt use the term: āhunkā==NEWS FLASH:
On 12/6/12, Frank DID use the term, itās IN his vocabā¦. thatās FRANKā¦.
Gerry Lee over 11 years ago
Iām kind of curious, a lot of you think Frank should trust Luann. What do you think Luannās intentions are? Will she and Quill remain chaste, or is she going to try to pick up where they left off just before Quill had to leave last time?
Guilty Bystander over 11 years ago
Since Frank actually pays the bills and Luann is a high school girl, he still has a right to call shots in his own house.
ACTIVIST1234 over 11 years ago
Frank is being realistic here. Although he didnāt see what almost happened in her room last year, he did see how Luann clung to Quil, how Luann was dressed (barely), and how Quill looked at her. Has Luann earned his trust? Not yet.*Hope Toni stops by for dinner so she & Luann can have a heart-to-heart talk. (How many months passed between Frank & Nancyās marriage and the birth of Brad?)

Frank, back off a bit. And that crack about not getting into drama camp was totally uncalled for. Yes, Luann had ulterior motives for wanting to attend, but she was taking it seriously. And honestly, the alternative (Luann spending the time constantly on edge about what Tiffany is doing with Quill) is worse in my mind.
Argy.Bargy2 over 11 years ago
Youāre on the right track. Possibly Frank is remembering what he wanted to get away with at that age, and he figures all guys are like he was. So itās not just Luann he doesnāt trust.

I registered for this website as I had a student talking in my class over media content. We had a lengthy discussion over escapism and how the internet plays into that false sense of security. We also had many laughs at most of the comments, and not in the traditional humorous way.
I can safely say, that if you are actually comparing a 30 year old comic strip in every day life then you are in desperate need of separating yourself from internet.
Luann is fake. The characters are fake, the stories are fake, everything about this comic strip is supposed to be funny not give you that release of escapism. Please seek help from your local therapist.

To all those who are saying that dads are overprotective of their daughters because of what they themselves were like at that age, I have this to say: First of all, I know how parents can worry about everything that goes on with their kids, but if dads are worrying about their daughters with boyfriends because they know how boys can be, then some things need to change. First, we need to stop rewarding boys (and men) for having sex with as many willing females as they can, while we still demonize girls who only want to go as far as kiss a guy by calling them sluts or whores. Secondly, parents need to sit down with their sons and let them know in no uncertain terms that they need to take a girlās ānoā seriously if she doesnāt want to have sex yet; in other words, teach them that ānoā means āno.ā Third, they also need to teach boys, as well as girls, that sex is a beautiful, precious thing that should not be used as a reward, punishment, or dare. How many times have you all heard of guys who will have sex with a girl(s) just to prove their āmanlinessā to their buddies? And of course, they should be taught that sex is a serious step that should not be taken until they are mature and ready for it.
Now, humankind being what it is, I know that what Iām laying out here is a pretty tallāif not impossibleāorder, but I donāt think Iām wrong to say it.

AMEN Leviticus. I love reading the comics because its my escape from reality for about 3 hours until Dinnertime. In high school my all time favorite TV show was the Incredible Hulk (and still is I have some episodes on DVD.) That also was my escape for an hour on Friday Nights at 8 PM. We all know its not real life and thatās what it is just ENTERAINMENT like going to the movies.

@lebannen- You actually arenāt an instructor, you couldnāt be and not be aware of the fact that entertainment is designed to draw people in and create that suspension of disbelief that makes it ārealā to us. If you read the huge uproar over the hit show āGame of Thronesā , the āRed Weddingā scene, youād know that good entertainment creates an emotional stake in viewers and readers that make them care. You go on to say you mocked us, which shows the lie of your claim of professionalism and occupation. Troll, pure and simple. We know the difference between reality and fantasy. We also know that good fantasy contains elements of reality to strengthen the illusion, and that these elements may rightly be commented on and debated. Weāre just having fun, but you are the one that canāt see what is happening here. Go away, if you canāt be polite and respectful you arenāt wanted.

Please re-read my post. I was talking mainly about TEENSāboth boys and girls, since their attitudes about sex form during that time and can be healthy or unhealthy based on the informationāor misinformationāthey receive from school, their peers, and their parents.

We already have our troll. Grab you a jar a vasoline and go play with yourself._____

āWhile I doubt they have called Quill a hunk in casual converstation between themā^On the strip from 12/6, Frank also called Quill a āhunkā, in conversing with Nancy over Lu and Quillās late night conversationsā¦ other than that?ā¦. I guess it wouldnāt seem to come up too often, even with some of the others Luann has been withā¦ they probably look at Quill as some āstatueāā¦ especially Nancy, as you sayā¦.

Such a statement is possible if a man is talking to his wife/girl friend. For years my wife has referred to Tom Selleck as a hunk. Now if I see a show staring him getting ready to come on, I will say, āDear, the Hunk is coming on TV.ā Frank was talking to his spouse. While I doubt they have called Quill a hunk in casual converstation between them, the same principle can apply^^Maybe , but, you were only repeating what your wife already said. Would you have called Tom Selleck a āhunkā on your own, if asked by a male friend, to describe him?
