Janis: If the days are getting shorter, why are they getting hotter? Arlo: It takes a long time to heat and cool this old rock. Mother Nature turns up the heat at the Winter Solstice. And three months later, it starts to really warm up. Arlo: At Summer Solstice, she turns it down, but it takes months to cool! Janis: That's a pretty simple analogy, Professor! on a related note, it is usually hottest around 2 pm even though the sun is no longer directly overhead, it takes a while to get the full effect of the irradiation.-either that or mother nature just likes hotter afternoons

In those parts of the world that use daylight saving time, 2 pm by the clock equates to 1 pm standard time, just one hour past the time when the sun is approximately overhead.
