Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for August 04, 2013
Transcript:
Arlo: This is the time of year they used to play the college all-star football game! The NFL champions would play a team of college all-stars at Soldier Field in Chicago! Arlo: Hardly anybody remembers it now, but it was a big deal when I was a boy! The NFL came to dominate the series as pro football became more established. In fact, the last NFL team to lose was the Green Pay Packers in 1963! Arlo: Poor Mrs. Lombardi! Janis: Who? Why? What happened to her?

I believe it was Vince who said, “Winning isn’t everything, but losing isn’t anything.”

Enough nostalgia, when do we go sailing?

It seems all the sport just aren’t the same..Owners wanting stadiums for free, then lease the name to a corporation who did put much or any into the cost, (Busch Stadium is the exception)..Players give their best until they get the big contract, Pujols example..If you want to watch a game on TV, good luck..Tickets and stadium food it way too expensive.

The College All Star game was great – one of my fond childhood memories, just like Arlo. It sort of kicked off the football season every year. I think the All Stars wore the same uniforms, but the players wore their college teams’ helmets.

Arlo must be older than I. I was around in ‘63; but I sure don’t remember this game at all. But then, football wasn’t my game. As long as there’s horsehide in the air, it’s baseball season.

OMG, someone DOES remember those games! Thank you, Arlo (and Jimmy)! I say replace the Pro-Bowl game (it’s become a joke) with a re-take/renewal of All-Star College vs. All-Pro teams, under current woosie Pro-Bowl Game rules. No body gets hurt, ratings jump, everyone gets satisfied. THANKS AGAIN JIMMY!

In June there is an allstars football game here on Long Island. The NYC high school allstars against the Long Island high school allstars. (In this case LI is used as the modern term and does not include Brooklyn & Queens which are including in the geographic description of LI. They play for NYC.) It is run by the Boomer Easaison Foundation. Our rev war reenactment unit used to fire our cannon at the games.
