Shannon: "Did Toni really faint when you asked her to marry you?"
Brad: "Actually, she asked me"
Shannon: "Oh."
Shannon: "Did you faint?"
Brad: "Don't you have some 'Star Wars' toys or somethin'?"
I was just asking that question…. if she was going to say/ask something that Brad wasn’t expecting… wondered if she was going to spill the beans about something, instead, though… but he definitely wasn’t looking for her inquisitive mind to drill a little….
But SOON Toni will Inform Him that Your Sorry, No-Good, Two-Bit, Scum-Bag “Actor” Father has Skipped off to Parts Unknown, FOREVER.AND That She AND Brad Will HAVE to ADOPT You for YOUR Own Good.
You know, Brad still seems owly most of the time. What gives? He never has a true smile, is almost always petulant and moody. Am not sure he should get married anytime soon. He has to learn to lighten up a bit.
Shannon is really not learning much from him at all. Her dad is never around and Brad always seems to resent being with her. Why doesn’t Brad take her out for walks or to play in a playground or out for a treat?
Yeah to Leviticus for being the Número UNO on the page. Even Yuri Gagarin would be proud of such an accomplishment….Luann’s so old I’m surprised she wasn’t in the crowd welcoming him back to earth.
This is a good educational experience for Shannon. She has clearly been brought up with certain expectations like the boy proposes and the girl faints^She certainly did seem to have that reaction, there in the middle panel….
Technically, the answer to Shannon’s implied question would have been “She said ‘No’”. That’s what happened when Bwad asked Toni.
And I think Bwad has spent quality time with Shannon on occasion. I can’t say how many occasions, but she definitely sees him as more of a male authority figure than Jonah. I read her interest in the upcoming wedding as at least partly a desire to become part of a “real family”.
We haven’t seen it, obviously, but I have no doubt that when Shannon wasn’t around Brad and Toni have already had at least one, and probably several conversations about what position Shannon will have in their marriage. Frankly, my hope is that they’ll go for the full-on adoption and remove (as much as possible) any lingering power ol’ Fishbait may have to control Shannon’s life. He’s not around now, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t show up later with some bent set of priorities.
A little embarrassed at not having been “The Man,” Brad? Well, get over it, because there will be many times in your married life when Toni takes the lead….
I just wonder where Greg is going with this arc. One thing is clear is that Shannon definitely likes Brad, and is benefitting greatly from the interaction. She is a really sweet girl, entirely within normal range for a bright 5 or 6 year old girl child. Her acting out was a reaction to the father’s lack of care, but with Toni and Brad she instinctively knows they are the parents she needs. Ahhhhh, maybe I do know the arc. It involves Shannon within the context of the upcoming nuptials. Lets see if my guess is on, or totally in the wrong county. By the way the way both Luann and Brad deal with Shannon says great things about their parents too if you think about it. Their parents may be cartoon parents, but they really are first-rate parents
Having Toni and Shannon play with the Star Wars action figures will be the way that the truth is finally revealed. The Dirk Vader doll will shout at the Shannon Fingerbiter doll, “You are my daughter, Shannon!!!”
Since Shannon spends over 99% of her time with Toni (or Brad), Jonah is hardly pretending to be her father at all. He’s just identified as such, to avoid Toni’s being labeled as an unwed mother.
LOL! Good One! =I forgot that there was supposed to be another “sponsor”, Bored Games, Inc….From Twist Educational Products, Inc…"Twist Ed., Inc. for short…. and of course their tagline was “From Twisted Minds….” =Also was trying to think of a way to include “?” and the Mysterians, but didn’t find “96 Tears” to be fitting, unless maybe I just used the title alone as the name of a game from Bored Games or something…
Ah yes, just as the proposal was basically a vehicle for the humiliation for Brad, so will be the wedding. The priest will ask Toni whether she takes Brad to be her lawfully wedded husband, and she will reply, “I do. * APRIL FOOL!!!*”
Lev, just remembered something……this isn’t really the first time that you’ve been first… I do remember that you led off the day with the first post on a “breaking news report” on a few occaisions….. and set a standard for news reporting… don’t happen to remember which standard though, Lol!….
The one I made about nothing being smaller than a point was canned. ^Go figure, indeed! That post was just up there somewhere, not even that old, as I had just finished looking at it before the last NG post…. =I guess you pegged it right…“Go Figure”…..
Levi, nice bit of writing but as you’ve been first before (which is a freebie), it doesn’t count as a first post unless you say something witty or insightful about the strip.*You might want to go back and edit it to add somethings about Shannon’s being the first little girl to ask a groom-in-waiting if he fainted.*And isn’t the plural of millenium, millenia?
That was revision 6, it has been amended and appended. It is up to revision 7 now.^Yes, I do believe that is correct…. as “Convention Secretary”, I have a record of that somewhere…. That was just last year, and it was revised almost last minute and finally approved 344-100, once the revision was proposed… a couple of “snags” in it at first, because of a tricky…. “clause”…..
What is humiliating about a white tuxedo? You assume it means, uh, lack of experience, right? How about it just means that was the color theme the couple wanted?
Again, as others have said, these are different times and women can propose. Why is that humiliating, unless you believe that the only correct way to live is where there is total inequality, and only men rule.
Obiviously, Levi spends the hours that his wife is sleeping visiting the Luann site. This explains his infatuation with Bernice, and his fantasies about Nancy.
At some point, lack of sleep will catch up with him, and he’ll call his wife ‘Bernice’.
For the record, I was actually checking the rules at GOComics, there is NO rule that every post has to be about the comic, they know we talk about other things, and they don’t care.
Glad they transformed Shannon from a brat to this precocious girl. Brad will enjoy her when he becomes her uncle…I believe he would be more a father than an uncle since Toni is her mother more than an aunt.
And also invoked was 2R, 109, Line 3 which follows right after (should have been included in 108, but was necessary as a separate subparagraph, to get the votes to pass): “If a comment is first, so long as a line of discussion is ventured upon said comment, and provided no site rules prohibit any language thereof, in accordance with 2R, 108 Line 52 above or any other standalone sections in this or any other part of the constitution, it is deemed permissible and acceptable as first comment, and if any subsequent comments start a new trhread, or if they differ from the general theme of the first topic, this alone shall not be deemed sufficient to disqualify said topic”…. =Next sentence continues: “So long as poster doesn’t otherwise violate the terms of the site that said poster is commenting on, and so long as otherwise deemed appropriate in discussion and in accord with the general understood language of the site (E.G., English, French, or any language generally known or invented that has at least two speakers) then comment shall be deemed as official”….
Yeah, I was saying that earlier… I took it as an: “This is awkward” moment, or a “Uh… don’t know what to do” moment… =Do you see it as something different?….
If it were like that movie with all of the Toys in it (The one from the A budget people, not the straight to DVD knockoff version from the “wannabe copycat studios”), they’d devise a plan to get Shannon to insist how thirsty she is, and get she and Brad to head into the kitchen…
How about the search engine known as “Ask”?^Ask is very appropriate!… However, the sponsors have to meet certain GCC Guidelines to qualify… a suit the other day noted the use of a cat food “sponsor” that was similar to another brand, so the sponsor was pulled… but there were issues with that “sponsor”, the CEO of the company coming under fire for a conflict of interest with a Dog food brand and a mix-up in their Cat and Dog foods…=Ask would have to be… altered in a way to qualify, maybe, say, “Answer”…. “the search engine that types the questions for you” or, “everybody is always typing questions… wouldn’t it be fun to know the answers and search for the questions, instead”? or some sort…
Ha Ha! Congrats!… Fall weddings seem to have such beautiful weather… with the added bonus that on anniversaries, the kids have to be in school, while you get the house to yourselves! At least… that’s how it’s supposed to work…..
One point – Subparagraph 2R, Section 108, Line 52, footnote C specifically states the above is true and valid only on the fifth Tuesday of each month, providing it coincides with a full moon.^Yes, that sticky clause… known as the “Fizzbin Rule”….
Levi, I defer to your expertise— I skipped the end notes. Dumb thing to do, dangerouse too.*JayB: No need to be up for the award: the writer IS the history, and that’s why writers always win. (Your PA comment made me LOL)

Jonah played the same role in Shannon’s conception as he has played in her upbringing, which is to say none at all. Shannon is Dirk’s daughter.
