Endtown is its citizens, not the cavern. Endtown will survive and even surpass whatever Jake brings. The Topsiders will only bring total extermination and there’s no escape from that.
This reminds me so much of some lines from my other favorite webcomic, Gunnerkrigg Court. Coyote: “How is that for an enigmatic answer?” Ysengrin: “Very enigmatic. It barely answers anything at all.” Antimony: “In fact, it raises more questions than before.”
It appears that my second guess is the correct one. Some crisis is coming to Endtown and Jake will be the Man Of The Hour, who will be needed to handle the crisis.
A bit like the way Britain needed Winston Churchill to be Prime Minister during WW2 but didn’t need him once the war was over, although the comparison ends there.
Ha! Jacob got bitch slapped! that’s a perfect way of putting it.I would like to be able to arrive and leave like that. That rabbit is in for a world of pain.I still want to see the 3 getting out of jail and a nice welcome party for them. It’s a chick thing, wanting to see Wally and Holly back together.
A quick status update on the auctions. Aaron’s got his hands full with catching up on the strip, so the auctions will be backburnered for a few days until he’s able to start posting new artwork again. Sorry for the wait, but thanks for your past participation in them. They will be back!
I agree that Marx is foreshadowing that Jake’s leadership will be the crucible that harden the resolve of the citizenry toward true freedom. He will show them to be careful what you wish for and united them to face the challenges that lay ahead. And that crucible started with the arrests and the deaths.
I’m sticking with my original guess\hope that the infection that is Jake and his group will be the ones cleansed…now that they’ve shown themselves. Not without cost, but it seems that Jake is fixin’ to be hoist on his own petard.
“the leader Endtown needs in the days to come.” Perhaps an expendable one? I am assuming here that the “Jackrabbit ascencion to power” party has not yet descended into the city itself. Remember, AM ( disguised as the High Council) forbade the rats from telling any of the power players what had happened down below. It may very well be that Jake is clueless as to what awaits him below…;-)
Now Jacob is going to have to deal with those folks who always looked to the council to settle their petty problems. The ones he does not like. Every petty problem will be dumped on him.Jacob got what he wanted delivered in a Limo with fancy fly girl rabbits. Now comes all the dump trucks with everything else that goes with it. And the line stretches for miles.
This version of Marx is growing on me, troubled, enigmatic. He may be virtually omnipotent but not at all free. It will be interesting to see what makes Jacob the leader Endtown needs in the coming days.
Technically, rabbits are NOT rodents. They are Lagomorphs. Back in 1912 they were moved from order Rodentia to order Lagomorpha. Of course we are talking about a rabbit formed from a human by the effects of radiation… and if the guy was a rat to begin with……
Salen Stormwing,This isn’t a game, it is a wonderfully complex story about people living in extremely interesting times. Following it is made all the more difficult by the fact that we are seeing only 20 panels of the story every week and we have too much time to analyze each new 4 panel piece of the plot. One reason it was much easier to follow the Al and Gustine story is that I started reading it after that arc was finished. I was able to read it all through the archives going from one strip to the next and stopping when I was ready for a break. That’s one reason why I’m looking forward to getting my copies of “Endtown 3” and “Endtown 4”. I imagine the “Countdown” story arc will make a lot more sense reading it out of the book.
What the future needs, but also what will lead to the rabbit falling on his own sword.Make monsters so that the town survives, but in the end the real leaders the town needs will rise.
There could be a lot of different ways to take Marx’s words. Given the way Jacob has sacrificed others to gain power, the popular one involves Jacob alienating everyone and getting the bum’s rush or maybe the same end they gave Allgood. Another possibility is that Jacob actually has hidden depths of leadership ability that are necessary in Endtown’s moment of need. Marx’s “…but I know you, Jackrabbit, in ways you can’t possibly imagine.” might be hinting at Jacob’s ability to rise to a challenge that he can’t possibly imagine. Either way, I imagine that Jacob’s reign won’t nearly be as much fun as he imagined.
Agree with Dawinskeeper. Jacob could be the leader they need to inspire them to get a better rules set for either selecting or replacing leaders, or a better set of laws limiting the damage such a person can do.
Thus he could be the leader they need without being in anyway wanted, liked, etc.
Rabbits are the closest non-primate evolutionary relative to humans. Rabbits and humans share a shrew as a common ancestor. Some of the shrews climbed trees and became primates, and the others kept to the ground and became rabbits.Jacob may be a great leader, but not yet. I think Marx is torn emotionally between the nasty person Jacob is now, and the enlightened person he will become after he goes through the crucible of coming events. He despises Jacob as he is now, but that Jacob is the necessary foundation for the Jacob he will become. Marx probably wants to hug the future Jacob and slap the current one repeatedly with a fish. Allgood could have had the same potential as Jacob, but Marx foresaw that he would squander it. If Allgood had won, Jacob could have been the one left hanging, and future Jacob’s ladder pulled out from under him. Allgood as a leader may not be strong enough or brave enough to handle the coming trials, and Endtown would fall. We already saw how vulnerable he is to deception.Jacob’s Ladder. I think I’ve stumbled onto what this whole story is about. He dreams of climbing to Heaven, and he’ll get there, but he has to go through Hell first, like Mussolini in Larry Niven’s “Inferno”.
I agree, something bad is coming and Jacob’s particular ‘talents’ are what is needed. As to the women and the deaths, if the crisis coming is dire enough the medicine for it must be also dire…
My thoughts:Endtown was stagnating. The people lived day by day with little interest in their society. Now?-The growing rift between the Rats and the other citicens will have to be dealt with.-Also the comlpacency of the police.-The acceptance of being mutants and the unse of resources wasted until now.And whatever other problems smouldered under the surface
I was just looking back at July 15th where it seems to be a rat looking into the Oracle Pool… Are those unusually long ears for a rat? http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2013/07/15
I suspect that Endtown will get their new and improved democracy only after they see what kind of sociopathic tyrant they have in Jack. Allgood would have been his own kind of tyrant, but not nearly as nasty as Jack will be. So, yes, he will be exactly what Endtown needs to survive and improve. I can only hope his tenure is short and doesn’t cause too much damage before he gets the bad end of a rope of his own. My faith in our Artist is restored.
Oh, dear. “Going to do Endtown a world of good” doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be alive at the end of whatever it is that’s coming, or that he won’t do the most good by serving as a really horrible example.
I think there’s some confusion about names. Jake Jackrabbit is his name. It’s not Jack.About Jake: I think it’s time to reconsider him. Jake stated that Aaron came to him about taking over leadership of Endtown. It wasn’t Jake’s idea although I think he fancied himself as being some kind of leader. Where he is at right now may not be so bad but he’s easily corruptable and the power will go to his head.I will give Jake credit for this: He’s evidently changed his position on immune humans. He wouldn’t have accepted Aaron’s offer otherwise. He may also be accepting of oddly changed mutants.
