It must have something to do with the splotch on the box lid. Is that supposed to be mold and therefore related to the mushrooms on the pizza? A pretty thin connection.
I love this site, but I think sometimes the commenters can be woefully unable to play a scene out logically. Or able to see humor that’s not a frying pan over the head sort of thing.
He’s saying Mary knew specifcially that he didn’t like mushrooms and she ordered them anyway. She’s saying that you cannot taste the mushrooms, so she either ordered them specifically to anger him or is unclear on why you get toppings on a pizza. Funny either way.
Ah, Guy & Rodd, word of advice, never waste a subtle and layered joke on the GoComics reader. For not only will they not get the joke, they will insult you and blame you for it.
Amazing – 27 comments on a comic nobody understands. Anyways, this was soooo my kids. Whenever I’d make something new, the first thing they would ask is – ‘Does it have mushrooms in it?’.
Puzzling. Looking for anomalies: 1. Two slices are removed, but just one vacant cutout; 2. No bites have been taken; 3. The pizza box should rotate 180 degrees for best access; 4. What is the dark splotch on the lid?; 5. The child goes without?; 6. Woman has no drink.
Karen345 explains what I take to be the point, and I agree it’s a sound point. I don’t know how many times I’ve been in the situation depicted, but I still don’t see why Mary’s nonsense logic is supposed to be funny-haha (it is certainly funny-peculiar!). Gracie Allen she is not.
Actually, I don’t really care whether he likes mushrooms or not, nor do I care why Mary ordered them nor why the kid has no food.I will go on to the next comic on my list and my life will continue as it normally does.
In food, mushrooms are used to enhance the flavor of the other ingredients. They have little or no flavor of their own. Hence, she says you can’t taste them.
Thanks Bev, for filling in…. and thanks to those who inquired…. but yes, I’ve had a busy few weeks.Back to whatever “normal” is soon, I hope.
And yes, I too had some problems with today’s strip…. I was tired and didn’t feel that I knew the definitive take… so I didn’t post,
I tend to agree with Dr. Toon and a few later that the joke is supposed to be that she says you can’t taste the mushrooms anyway….Reminds me a bit of an old old joke: “I’m sure glad I don’t like peas” “Why?”“Cos if I liked them, I’d eat them…. and I don’t like them.”
Talked to someone else who thought the woman had scraped off all her toppings, and that’s why she couldn’t taste them. You can agree or not with either of those…. but…..
What I DON’T agree with is the critical or snarky tone taken by several posters today….
I don’t think anybody here, and yes, including me, is SO much smarter or better at “getting” everything that he or she is entitled to disparage other comments or their makers….or that anybody, whether or not paying three whole cents a day, is entitled to insult the cartoonist.
(BTW @information…. you’ve dropped by several strips in the past to say you got it and we poor slobs didn’t…. but since you don’t explain it, why would anyone believe you?)
I attribute the “missing slice” to the imprecision of the artist rather than a point to be made by it.
I had some trouble with the point of the comic as well. After looking at the comments, I wasn’t satisfied with any answer, at least not 100%, so I did some research. The “you can’t even taste them” statement (often eliciting the reply “then why put them on there?”) is prevalent in books, movies, and life in general for several years, and can be found on blogs and posts about mushrooms, onions, and other ingredients in pizza, soup, casseroles, etc.
That is the consensus, then; I think it may have eluded many of us because we expect comics to be — well, comical. Puns are funny (not everyone likes them, but they have comical value). Sometimes, a comical reference to life experiences is funny. This, however, is basically something that the author apparently found funny but most of us did not.

I see two people each holding a slice, but only one slice is missing from the pizza.

Could it be that the lid of the pizza box is mouldy?

Not a clue, maybe Mr.Thonpson’s wife got mushrooms on the pizza and he’s chiding her in the papers.

It’s an obvious joke. Though probably not for the flyover states folks. Go back to church and read the Bible! It’s best for all of us.

What used to be a great comic under Guy and Robb has turned to rubbish.

At least mushrooms are easy to pick off. I hate onions. I hate it worse when they’re minced up all tiny so I can’t pick them off.

Wait, does the kid’s black food play in there? It must, otherwise he’d have pizza.

Sorry Bev…. almost forgot….
Her reply was very saucy…. but it sounds like the mushrooms weren’t in very good taste.
I’m surprised his reaction wasn’t saltier… he didn’t even pepper her with complaints, after she did such a cheesy thing…. but I bet it grated on him….
Sigh…..you know, I can’t come up with much right now that doesn’t sound half baked…and there’s no dough in doing this….
So for now I’ll just say good pie.

Looks like the mushrooms are all stuck to the top of the box, thus being unable to taste.
