Wow, a tear in Phelps’ eye!… – She probably meant “on track” wise, and not necessarily just “her”, literally… Still, for all her sincerity, though, she doesn’t realize the way a “younger” person would perceive “her” in her "nowness"…. It’s as if “old people are old and frumpy”, and “young people are young and…. Well… not frumpy”….. – It’s like yesterday… second verse, same as the first…

Now I am sure she is going her best to try to go to the prom. Bernice should not be repressed.

Miss Phelps must be getting sentimental in her old age! But what I am wondering about is what part of April the Prom will be in. With all the buildup this story is getting, there should be plenty of hijinks and shenanigans on the climactic night!

Well, Bernice’s becoming Phelps (as indicated by the name sign today) solves the problem. Bernice doesn’t have to go to the Prom, after all. Instead, she can help Delta cook dinner for the poor, and 40 years later she can finally attend the Prom, as the chaperone.

While we’re on the subject of age, how was it that the much older Mrs. Horn was portrayed with such wisdom and warmth, while Margo Phelps, who’s a lot younger, is portrayed as such a dolt? Why?

The novel I am currently reading is beckoning…’nite all… ;)

A) Skipping prom doesn’t mean you skip every enjoyable thing. Not everyone’s idea of fun is the same, although I’m not sure if Bernice ever does anything she considers fun…

B) Who knows what Ms. Phelps is like outside of school? Maybe she actually has friends, family, a steady boyfriend, hobbies and activities she enjoys, etc. She may not be the miserable person Bernice thinks she is and is afraid to end up as.

Run and don’t look back, Bernice!

Another reason to go to prom: Bernice will be able to empathize and understand her future teenage patients more if she goes and has more fun in high school.

Well, people… on the other hand: Miss Phelps is – in her eyes – successful and she has a paying job and a good life… actually: if your kids were to be gainfully employed as school counselors and happy and contend, wouldn’t you label that as success? But I also hope this is the push Bernice will need to go to prom and feed needy families on the other six days of the week.

Go to the dance, Bernice.

Wouldn’t it be a strange irony if Delta ended up working in a high school lunch kitchen after college?

That settles it: Bernice is gonna go out and get laid on prom night.

We all need some goal in life, such as morphing into Miz Phelps. It makes any related loss all worth while.

Let loose and do both…feed the homeless in the morning & go to the Prom in the evening.

Greg also changed the name plate on the desk from Phelps to Halper. Sort of like the ghost of Christmas yet to come.

So, she wants to “feed a family” on prom night. Why doesn’t she do so the night before prom? Or a week before hand? Or do so every week? Or help a few poor students who can’t afford a prom dress or tux by approaching a few stores and seeing if they would donate or discount? B says she wants to be mature, but really, it’s just a play for attention and a "I"m better than you" statement.

-It’s never a good story for someone to find out that a person they like despises them.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Bernice ends up going with Les?

Ohhh! That hurts!!! That’s the last thing Bernice wants. Go dance Bernice. There’s this great guy in a wheelchair, and I bet he knows how to wheel that chair around to the beat of the band. He is waiting for your phone call. You never really broke up, and you have waited for him to finish school. Now it is his turn to wait patiently for you to finish school. In fact you will soon be old enough to marry without your parents’ consent, and balancing a marriage, home and college can be done. I did it. So can you.

-Delta is intentionally doing that on prom night in order to make her point about how the prom is pointless.-Yes, that’s Delta’s point. But is it Bernice’s belief? That we don’t know, especially since her face and thought balloon in the last panel don’t seem to show that she is accepting Ms. Phelp’s view of her future….

I like the paper on Ms. Phelp’s wall in the first panel that says ‘frame this’. That’s as funny as the name plate in the last frame that says ‘Halper’ instead of ‘Phelps’!

And there it is: another commercial that rehashes the “old spinster” stereotype. Seriously, it needs to go. The 19th century is over.

If that doesn’t wake her up nothing will…

What good would it do for Miz P to know children thought she was old and pathetic?i’m still a child and many think it of me.it is part of the nature of the thing..Let’s see, last night on MIKE & MOLLY the sister explains some consensus belief Molly needs to continue seeing the shrink.“You’ve been talking about me behind my back?”“Of course, we love you and wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings saying them where you could hear us.”She’s a great little sister.

-It’s a perfect story-It’s not a story. For all too many people, it’s real life, as are the consequences. I was a volunteer on a crisis switchboard and tried to talk some folks out of attempting suicide. Just having Ms. Phelps go home and cry isn’t the resolution of a ‘story’ like this. A jolt to the psyche is not usually resolved by crying. At best, we would see Ms. Phelps quitting her job and deciding to do something that doesn’t involve working with teens. I’m not sure that teen readers of this comic are ready to deal with serious depression and its consequences.

FYI- Greg is going to be one of the featured speakers at the Reuben Awards over the Memorial Day weekend. Makes sense as San Diego is his turf. Was looking forward to this event, but my daughter chose that weekend to get married. I made the right choice. Bought a ticket to San Diego. One way.

-I probably shouldn’t do this, but I’ll try, anyway. -Stories that you can take life lessons from aren’t usually found in comics; they are found in novels and short stories. Many of those are condemned by ‘intellectuals’ as being nothing but escapism or lowbrow entertainment, but many have changed people’s ideas. An example is Uncle Tom’s Cabin.-Biography and autobiography are even greater opportunities to provide stories that can teach important lessons. I recently read “Eva’s Story”, the story of a woman who survived the Holocaust. She is actually touring the US right now, explaining her experiences, but the book alone teaches a lot.-Comics are a lesser medium. I think of the main characters of comics as just that: main or viewpoint characters. Not ‘heroes’ or ‘villains’. And even when an arc lasts for a few weeks, I still can’t see it as ‘teaching’ the way a book or short story can teach.-But that’s just me, I guess.

I suspect Miss Phelps has her reasons for being single, but given her age and the the decade she spent her youth in, her story probably isn’t “rated G”.

Greg, I know I keep saying that Bern needs a new look, but, that’s not it!

That should get her dolled up for the prom.

Being friendly with customers is part of the job, part of the way they get repeat customers, more sales, more business. She was hurting the business for her own desires. REALITY.

Bernice is picturing herself turning into a woman she believes is doing her job poorly. She is not making fun of her..“You don’t have to tell her what you think…but you don’t have to use her for your benefit and trash her to her friends.”-To which friends of Miz Phelps is Bernice trashing the lady? She isn’t.You figure nobody should ever use the services of people they don’t fully respect?Can’t you see how ridiculous that is?

Miss Phelps is made fun of, because she’s incompetent at her job, I’m not saying it’s right, just saying that teens will do that, to incompetent teachers (I did)

Bernice is in serious need of a makeover. She doesn’t have to be a dog, she’s “just drawn that way.”

Go to the Prom, Bernice! You and Delta have time enough to do the volunteer thing without doing it that night. It’s a once in a lifetime event. Don’t miss it.

Actually, Brad was fired from WW for refusing Ann’s sexual come ons. So far bi-Ann has sexually harassed 3 of the main characters, in order, Bernice , Brad, and finally TJ.

Oh, and she hit on Zane a bit, but, his rebuttal was so sharp and hateful that she decided to try and seduce Bern, instead.

Hmmm, I may have to grant you the TJ deception contention but definitely not the firing justification.It was just the pretty girl she forbade to come in and without justification since she was not interfering with his work or her private personal erands she ran him on.Further she made unwanted physical contact with said customer and fired an uninvolved Brad as a way to punish Toni for not being cowed.Naturally, you blame Brad and excuse Ann, just for the fun of pretending to be obtuse.
