Transcript:
Miss Phelps: "You know what I see when I look at you, Miss Halper? I see success!" Bernice: "You do?" Miss Phelps: "Yes. I see someone who's focused on her future, who isn't distracted by what's "Popular." I see a sensible young woman who's on track to be a fine counselor! I see...." Miss Phelps: "ME!"
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Wow, a tear in Phelpsâ eye!⊠â She probably meant âon trackâ wise, and not necessarily just âherâ, literally⊠Still, for all her sincerity, though, she doesnât realize the way a âyoungerâ person would perceive âherâ in her "nowness"âŠ. Itâs as if âold people are old and frumpyâ, and âyoung people are young andâŠ. Well⊠not frumpyââŠ.. â Itâs like yesterday⊠second verse, same as the firstâŠ

I wonder what would have happened if Miss Phelps had gone to Her senior high school prom?! ;)

ââŠwe get Bernice made up like (Miss) Phelps.â
Maybe NOW Bernice will decide she Needs to attend her senior prom⊠;)
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
Now it sunk in⊠This is the impetus for Bernice to âgo wildâ (or whatever teenagers call it these days)!

Now I am sure she is going her best to try to go to the prom. Bernice should not be repressed.
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
Miss Phelps must be getting sentimental in her old age! But what I am wondering about is what part of April the Prom will be in. With all the buildup this story is getting, there should be plenty of hijinks and shenanigans on the climactic night!
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 11 years ago
Well, Berniceâs becoming Phelps (as indicated by the name sign today) solves the problem. Bernice doesnât have to go to the Prom, after all. Instead, she can help Delta cook dinner for the poor, and 40 years later she can finally attend the Prom, as the chaperone.

While weâre on the subject of age, how was it that the much older Mrs. Horn was portrayed with such wisdom and warmth, while Margo Phelps, whoâs a lot younger, is portrayed as such a dolt? Why?
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Did Brad go to His prom? ;)
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
The novel I am currently reading is beckoningâŠânite all⊠;)

A) Skipping prom doesnât mean you skip every enjoyable thing. Not everyoneâs idea of fun is the same, although Iâm not sure if Bernice ever does anything she considers funâŠ
B) Who knows what Ms. Phelps is like outside of school? Maybe she actually has friends, family, a steady boyfriend, hobbies and activities she enjoys, etc. She may not be the miserable person Bernice thinks she is and is afraid to end up as.
Leon Manuel Real almost 11 years ago
Run and donât look back, Bernice!
seyleigh almost 11 years ago
Another reason to go to prom: Bernice will be able to empathize and understand her future teenage patients more if she goes and has more fun in high school.
Namrepus almost 11 years ago
Who you gonna call?
38lowell almost 11 years ago
Bet that scare the H*** out of her!
cruftschamp almost 11 years ago
Well, people⊠on the other hand: Miss Phelps is â in her eyes â successful and she has a paying job and a good life⊠actually: if your kids were to be gainfully employed as school counselors and happy and contend, wouldnât you label that as success? But I also hope this is the push Bernice will need to go to prom and feed needy families on the other six days of the week.
cdward almost 11 years ago
Go to the dance, Bernice.

Wouldnât it be a strange irony if Delta ended up working in a high school lunch kitchen after college?

We all need some goal in life, such as morphing into Miz Phelps. It makes any related loss all worth while.

âSuccess!â good. âME!â not so good.Bernice, you still have time to escape to the prom!
nickel_penny almost 11 years ago
So, she wants to âfeed a familyâ on prom night. Why doesnât she do so the night before prom? Or a week before hand? Or do so every week? Or help a few poor students who canât afford a prom dress or tux by approaching a few stores and seeing if they would donate or discount? B says she wants to be mature, but really, itâs just a play for attention and a "I"m better than you" statement.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago
YIKES! Run, Bernice, run!
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-Itâs never a good story for someone to find out that a person they like despises them.
cjswan232482 almost 11 years ago
Wouldnât it be funny if Bernice ends up going with Les?
Willow Mt Lyon almost 11 years ago
Ohhh! That hurts!!! Thatâs the last thing Bernice wants. Go dance Bernice. Thereâs this great guy in a wheelchair, and I bet he knows how to wheel that chair around to the beat of the band. He is waiting for your phone call. You never really broke up, and you have waited for him to finish school. Now it is his turn to wait patiently for you to finish school. In fact you will soon be old enough to marry without your parentsâ consent, and balancing a marriage, home and college can be done. I did it. So can you.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-Delta is intentionally doing that on prom night in order to make her point about how the prom is pointless.-Yes, thatâs Deltaâs point. But is it Berniceâs belief? That we donât know, especially since her face and thought balloon in the last panel donât seem to show that she is accepting Ms. Phelpâs view of her futureâŠ.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
I like the paper on Ms. Phelpâs wall in the first panel that says âframe thisâ. Thatâs as funny as the name plate in the last frame that says âHalperâ instead of âPhelpsâ!

What good would it do for Miz P to know children thought she was old and pathetic?iâm still a child and many think it of me.it is part of the nature of the thing..Letâs see, last night on MIKE & MOLLY the sister explains some consensus belief Molly needs to continue seeing the shrink.âYouâve been talking about me behind my back?ââOf course, we love you and wouldnât want to hurt your feelings saying them where you could hear us.âSheâs a great little sister.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-Itâs a perfect story-Itâs not a story. For all too many people, itâs real life, as are the consequences. I was a volunteer on a crisis switchboard and tried to talk some folks out of attempting suicide. Just having Ms. Phelps go home and cry isnât the resolution of a âstoryâ like this. A jolt to the psyche is not usually resolved by crying. At best, we would see Ms. Phelps quitting her job and deciding to do something that doesnât involve working with teens. Iâm not sure that teen readers of this comic are ready to deal with serious depression and its consequences.

> In Luannverse, unless another character is introduced, the pickings are slim.>(1) Leslie Knox apparently wants to attend.(2) So does Ox, who will be there as a bouncer but without a ârealâ date(3) Whatever happened to mini-Elvis?(4) Iâm sure Bernice can get her brother to take her.(5) Isnât it about time to rescue Aaron Hill from the volcano?

FYI- Greg is going to be one of the featured speakers at the Reuben Awards over the Memorial Day weekend. Makes sense as San Diego is his turf. Was looking forward to this event, but my daughter chose that weekend to get married. I made the right choice. Bought a ticket to San Diego. One way.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-I probably shouldnât do this, but Iâll try, anyway. -Stories that you can take life lessons from arenât usually found in comics; they are found in novels and short stories. Many of those are condemned by âintellectualsâ as being nothing but escapism or lowbrow entertainment, but many have changed peopleâs ideas. An example is Uncle Tomâs Cabin.-Biography and autobiography are even greater opportunities to provide stories that can teach important lessons. I recently read âEvaâs Storyâ, the story of a woman who survived the Holocaust. She is actually touring the US right now, explaining her experiences, but the book alone teaches a lot.-Comics are a lesser medium. I think of the main characters of comics as just that: main or viewpoint characters. Not âheroesâ or âvillainsâ. And even when an arc lasts for a few weeks, I still canât see it as âteachingâ the way a book or short story can teach.-But thatâs just me, I guess.

> And now one of our âheroesâ is making fun of a teacher yet again who is not only nice to her, but is trying to help her with her career.>Bernice acts towards Phelps the same way that she does toward Luann â she is apparently their good friend, but as soon as she gets outside of their presence, she rips them to shreds verbally and makes it clear that she actually doesnât like them at all.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago

I suspect Miss Phelps has her reasons for being single, but given her age and the the decade she spent her youth in, her story probably isnât ârated Gâ.
Mikeyj almost 11 years ago
Greg, I know I keep saying that Bern needs a new look, but, thatâs not it!

â If you really want to get the message across, have Phelps overdose on pills in her sadness.â.Just to be clear, you would like to kill her off just to get across a message? And the message is in part: âMaybe I should keep my negative thoughts to myself.â?You want Bernice to tell Miz Phelps she doesnât respect the job she does as a means of showing how bad it would be if people did exactly that?FASCINATING.â T.J got Ann fired by scamming customers for months!â.You figure if you say it long enough it will become true? TJ did not scam customers. He suggested they buy something more expensive than they originally intended and many did so and left happy.ââBrad got fired for not doing his job and hanging out with customers!â.Not customers, a particular customer. Ayn was using her bullying techniques to isolate people from their support group, their friends and relatives. Being friendly with customers is part of the job, part of the way they get repeat customers, more sales, more business. She was hurting the business for her own desires. REALITY.
.âAnd now one of our âheroesâ is making fun of a teacher yet again who is not only nice to her, but is trying to help her with her career.â.Please try to read what is actually there. Bernice is picturing herself turning into a woman she believes is doing her job poorly. She is not making fun of her..âYou donât have to tell her what you thinkâŠbut you donât have to use her for your benefit and trash her to her friends.â-To which friends of Miz Phelps is Bernice trashing the lady? She isnât.You figure nobody should ever use the services of people they donât fully respect?Canât you see how ridiculous that is?
Mikeyj almost 11 years ago
Miss Phelps is made fun of, because sheâs incompetent at her job, Iâm not saying itâs right, just saying that teens will do that, to incompetent teachers (I did)
Airman almost 11 years ago
Bernice is in serious need of a makeover. She doesnât have to be a dog, sheâs âjust drawn that way.â
JohnsR676 almost 11 years ago
Go to the Prom, Bernice! You and Delta have time enough to do the volunteer thing without doing it that night. Itâs a once in a lifetime event. Donât miss it.
Mikeyj almost 11 years ago
Actually, Brad was fired from WW for refusing Annâs sexual come ons. So far bi-Ann has sexually harassed 3 of the main characters, in order, Bernice , Brad, and finally TJ.
Mikeyj almost 11 years ago
Oh, and she hit on Zane a bit, but, his rebuttal was so sharp and hateful that she decided to try and seduce Bern, instead.

Hmmm, I may have to grant you the TJ deception contention but definitely not the firing justification. It was just the pretty girl she forbade to come in and without justification since she was not interfering with his work or her private personal erands she ran him on.Further she made unwanted physical contact with said customer and fired an uninvolved Brad as a way to punish Toni for not being cowed.Naturally, you blame Brad and excuse Ann, just for the fun of pretending to be obtuse.
