It looks like Kolossal is talking to Mysta. We are not privy to what Shaw is hearing. However, I’m sure he knows that the original Mysta was Tracy’s daughter-in-law, he obviously knows that Tracy’s current daughter-in-law is the ex of his partner. So obviously Tracy was the one to contact with whatever conversation her overheard.
Within the Tracyverse, Tracy has always been famous since the first year of the Tracy strip. As early as January, 1932, we were shown the ordinary citizens of Tracytown speculating on how quickly Tracy was going to nab the latest criminals. His fame became forever solidified when later that same year, he found and rescued the kidnapped toddler Buddy Waldorf from Big Boy. Dick Tracy is every bit as famous within the strip as he is in the real world.
Kolossal appears to be admonishing Mysta about something. I’m pretty sure he’s not the director of the movie, so I don’t think he’s telling her about her acting. I’m guessing that maybe he’s asking her to cover up about the previously missing horse.
I am not sure why Mr. Shaw chose this moment to phone for Tracy (we weren’t privy to the Kolossal-Mysta conversation), but it does suggest that things are rapidly coming to a peak for our favorite Chief of Detectives: Shaw wants him, Warbucks wants him; who next?
Whatever Kolossal is directing Mysta to do, you can be sure it’s not legal. I’m thinking that Kolossal is suggesting Mysta add a little zap to ol’ Sparkplug in an upcoming scene. (Something just big enough to alter the outcome of a race.)The question is, who’ll get to Kolossal first – Tracy or Angus?
Tracy’s being called in just as Angus is almost certainly plotting mayhem against Kolossal. Something tells me this will end up being a murder investigation.
We know only that Mysta was part of the morning shoot with Sparkplug. Kolossal told a man on the set (the director?) that he had to be done by noon. We later learned that this was so that Kolossal could take Sparkplug to Wilcox Downs, where he was raced under the name Quickdraw, winning at 30-1 odds. Kolossal likely wants to assure that word not get out that the horse left the studio at noon. Pointing a finger at Mysta, instructing her to keep mum about this, is a fool’s errand. As Willy007 points out (with delightful visual reminder), Kolossal had better hope she doesn’t point right back at him.
Downright hilarious!I see some people in yellow trenchcoats, but no yellow fedoras.Tracy was last seen on April 16, 2014… the day after the income tax filing deadline. Maybe he is on assignment with the IRS… ?
Thanks for the info on the Batman TV series – and why it’s never turned up on DVD.I have the spin-off movie (actually intended to be the series pilot!), but I’d love to have the first season on disc.

Maybe Kolossal is trying to entice Mysta into being a jockey! Woo-hoo! The opportunities would be endless!

It had better be Marty & Spud because Mario Scott of M&S Entertainment (see their website) might not like it so much!

Kolossal is probably making sure that, if anyone should ask Mysta about Sparkplug/Quick Draw, this is her response.

Has anyone yet pointed out that Scott Shaw is a real-life cartoonist and animator, who’s probably a friend of Joe?
Also, I don’t know what they mean by “pencil test” but the first thing that comes to mind is inappropriate for a PG strip…
