Where the heck did Gene pick up the hoe and why? He is not going to hoe that wild field. And he did not have it in his hands yesterday. (and do not start with the wild oats stuff either)

Gene is using it as a leaning stick. I think there is trouble coming – Mary Lou has ambitions – big house, car…boat?

Isn’t she part owner of the restaurant? If so her minimum share is already fixed. Of course, daddy can be more generous. And unless it is a very tidy sum, they won’t be able to live off it for as long as they think. And in the mean time, the little girl may lose a hand to a snapping turtle.

Unless the reason Pop is selling is due to a health issue…

Seems, like I remember that Gus said at one point, “I’m not selling the restaurant.”, which runs counter to what he said at other times. I suspect JJ has a resolution to that paradox.

Did anybody else notice Meg messing with the snapping turtle???

If you notice, Meg is real close to the creek in panel 2. Then after what happens in the 3rd panel, she’s stretching her stick in the last panel. Seems to me Meg is more responsible than Mary Lou and Gene, who are still babbling away, not paying any attention to her.

…This is sounding like “coming full circle” for some reason. I’ve been reading A&J long enough to know that the two of them had similar discussions many, many, MANY years ago.

I love the scenes with Meg playing while her parents talk and she looks younger than when she was 1st reintroduced with dark hair.

Gus was talking at one point of selling everything. not only the restaurant but his other properties as well. Mary Lou does have a share of the ownership in the Dock but i doubt it’s on paper but Gus will do right by her but as has been noted she has a sister and nieces and nephews who neither she or her dad have seen in years. i think Gus may want to repair some bridges that may have been damaged there while there is still time.

Notice the paradox in having to have a windfall before you can afford to live simply?

There is a difference between choosing to live simply with an adequate income and having to live simply because you are poor.

I think that Meg needs to wear a hoodie instead of an old lady looking sweater jacket. Also — her nose is smaller than the original “New Meg” so it makes her look more childlike.

That’s why Teddy Roosevelt favored what later members of his party call the “Death Tax.”

When you realize danger, always poke at it with a stick…

I like this version of drawing Meg compared to when she was with her friends a few weeks ago. She seems more childlike and younger in the manner she is being drawn.
