“Americans are getting stronger. Twenty years ago, it took two people to carry ten dollars’ worth of groceries. Today, a five-year-old can do it.”― Henny Youngman
Miss Avis seems to have quite a rotund posterior for someone who doesn’t seem to be otherwise obese. Also, pickled beets are quite nice when made properly. Though I probably wouldn’t buy the commercially made varieties.
I was born in ‘42, and food shortages existed for quite a while after the war ended. “Take it or leave it” was coupled with "You’re too young to know you don’t like it". I went to bed hungry more than once.
I was a very skinny child and didn’t eat a lot. One day in grade school I passed out. Was taken home by the janitor, I believe. Mom took me to the Doctor next day who diagnosed me with iron poor blood. The prescription iron pills were HUGE. But, they gave me an appetite!
I was given a choice. Eat it or don’t. There weren’t many options on the table, so I just didn’t eat if I didn’t want what was cooked. It would have been easy enough to feed me as a child – just have some leftovers from a previous meal I did like, but instead I developed an anorexic problem. If I ate anything I didn’t like, I threw it up – not by choice – so of course I stopped eating foods that didn’t taste acceptable. I got used to the idea that not eating was expected and the only option.
If we didn’t eat our okra and pork brains for dinner, we ate them for breakfast the next day. No microwave back in the 60’s so we ate them cold. I never forced my kids to eat food they hated and they turned out fine.
Now days kids have too many food allergies that will make them sick.I remember those days, not Ms. Avis age or Grandpa. When my dad was out of work, for cheap meals either be pancakes or waffles, I got tired of that.

The eating habits of other people’s children are none of your business Lady! And I bet Ruthie’s parents don’t like pickled beats either.

Here is your dinner. You can either pick at it or leave it.

Beet greens are quite delicious. But you can keep the roots.

I know it is only a cartoon, but someone could have offered to carry the bags for her.

My dad used to say, “we’re having…like it or lump it”. One time I smarted off by saying “lump it”. I still ate it.

I only had one choice. Eat it. They wouldn’t let me leave it. Unless at some point I puked.

As someone said in the Discworld novel Moving Pictures, “It’s stoo. Take it or leave it. Three people did both this morning.”
