Apollo’s main feature seems to be his good looks. He’s another in the space-themed name group, along with Venus. Mike mentioned this Apollo character last November and we finally get to see him. I suspect that this is just a sneak peek at an upcoming story, however.
It’s been more than a year since we first met Venus, and we still haven’t had a really good look at her yet. Hopefully she steps out of the shadows tomorrow. From today’s first panel, it looks like we have confirmation that the top of her dress is made of fishnet. Her skirt on the other hand is getting longer and longer. Here’s what we saw of her a year ago yesterday:
At the risk of maybe repeating myself, I gotta say this strip is at the point where I don’t have to worry where it’s going. I don’t hope it’s going to be good, I expect it. Since taking over, the new Team Tracy has set the bar very high, and they continue to push towards excellence. I know, not everyone likes the same things, still for me, I’ll take this as the number one strip out there today. Thanks folks for the fun.
Received some late 60’s/early 70’s Dick Tracy: Missing Year issues last night. Just did quick flip-through but was intrigued to see that Venus’ set-up w/ the concealing partition was reminiscent of how Mr. Intro was handled by Gould.
Meliès is from the bizarre side of the ledger, but Venus is apparently good-looking, and Apollo thinks he is, too, although he has too much chin, too much toothiness, and way too much hair (he looks like a refugee from a ’70s polyester-gangster flick). The mythology-themed villains here, Gruesome (more handsome than Apollo in my book) and Dr. Einstein there, and Kandikane Lane, still speeding on her motorcycle as far as we know, already provide a sizable cast for this new arc, along with the MCU regulars and Vitamin Flintheart. Now we need some time to establish their relationships, goals, and relative importance to this particular story….
So Apollo runs the overseas branch of the Blackhearts? Sounds like they are indeed a big operation, big enough to put the Apparatus out of business? And too big to be shut down easily.I look forward to Tracy’s confrontation with them. Maybe it’ll be another big story, like the Mr. Crime epic.
@Neil Wick:Re: Your last comment yesterday. I saw that framed picture also, and I wondered who it might be, but I really couldn’t make it out. If it’s significant in some way, we’ll probably see a better view of it in a future strip.
Always a pleasure to see Venus. Thanks for the vivid reminders, Willy007. Méliès is even shorter than I recalled, although at the ready to protect his beautiful boss. Apollo reeks of overblown ego. He is the only expendable one of the three, as I’d like to see the Blackhearts as a long-term replacement for the Apparatus. While we can’t know from one strip, it may be of note that Venus and Méliès are not discussing the devastation on Thunder Island. Might they be apprehensive at Apollo’s return if a costly enterprise they sponsored just went THOOMM? They seem relaxed and pleased to welcome Apollo back to Tracyville. The Blackhearts are sitting pretty…for now.I agree wholeheartedly, coldsooner!
The Apparatus consists of whom, nowadays? Mumbles and Doubleup; I’d say one IQ between them, lol? And I like scary villains, not pretty boy ones……though this just screams out that Apollo will probably end up looking worse than Gruesome in the end……
I have some comments to make but I’ll have to catch up later. I’ve been glued to the TV to see what’s happening with the shooting situation in Ottawa. I was supposed to be attending a dinner and study group at my church about 3 blocks from Parliament Hill where the second shooting took place, but the meeting tonight has been cancelled, because they are still warning people to stay away from downtown Ottawa while they look for a possible second gunman.
Thanks to Stagger Lee and NightShade09 for the David Janssen (and MTM) shout outs. I first encountered David Janssen in Harry O. I was a fan, later discovering The Fugitive. The great character actor, Anthony Zerbe, was also appreciated, as were such fine guests as Martin Sheen, Will Geer and Jodie Foster. .Sending out a good thought to Neil..Thanks so much, Willy007! Back at you.
Those are the sorts of things I don’t want Canada to resemble, but unfortunately, these things can happen in places where you wouldn’t expect them to. Thanks to NightShade, Gweedo, and Pequod for the positive thoughts. I managed to do what I needed to do today without going to downtown Ottawa. This is only Ottawa’s 5th murder this year, so things are not all bad, when you think about it.

Finally, Venus is back! Here’s how she looked, the last time we saw her in May:

Good morning VB.It’s great to see my favourite new-era deformed villain again.I don’t know Apollo but I guess he’s good at managing a broad.
jonahhex1 about 10 years ago
Well…Apollo is already showing he’s smug arrogant and egotistical. Venus seems to attract a lot of henchmen with those qualities.

We have some overlapping themes going on here: Greco-Roman mythology and space. Apollo and Venus. Méliès is back, too!

Tracy might as well hang it up and go hang out with Snuffy. He’s outnumbered 100:1. Probably outgunned, too!

Every time I see Venus in her fishnet attire, I’m reminded of Dr. Strange’s girlfriend Clea, as drawn by the great Steve Ditko.
