Have you honestly never learned how to be polite to people, before? I’m actually embarrassed for you, and a little surprised that you’ve acted like a snob publicly….
I have never heard of it, either. I’m not all that into classic art for the most part. Knowing there was an apple there makes this comic a lot funnier, though. XD
And I have to say that being honest doesn’t give you carte blanche to act like a douchebag.
There’s a difference between honesty and rudeness. While I appreciated your posting the painting, it is not “honesty” to the humiliate the person asking about it. It’s just poor manners.
You can’t learn if you can’t ask. Next time you consult any type of reference, would you want someone to make nasty comments? Everyone can’t know everything. I’m old and I’ve been to a lot of museums and it still took me a minute or two. I like a challenge.
Well I didn’t get it either, although I now vaguely remember the painting after seeing the picture. While I can appreciate many good works of art they don’t always hold my interest.
Also, Magritte’s my favourite artist, but claiming he’s someone ‘everybody knows’, especially beyond The Treachery of Images, is laughable. Among the surrealists, only Dali can even come close to claiming that, and even there, The Persistence of Memory and the man himself and his wacky moustache are pretty much all most people would know.
Two bits sez common tater learned what ‘The Son Of Man’ is same as I… Using Google Images. Doubt if he’d known of it’s existence before todays strip. ;-)
The title may be clearly displayed on your monitor, but I read go comics on a tablet, at leas only I gan get my laptop monitor fixed. Even with the zoom feature (not available on every comic), some of these are difficult to nearly impossible (“The Dinette Set”) to read, even with a magnifying glass.
I tried reading on my smartphone, but even then, far too pixilated to see.
Don’t attribute arrogance to coffee. What can you tell me of Electromagnetic Radiation Propagation? If you’re not knowledgable, I won’t be embarrassed for you.
the concept of grabbing the painted apple out and actually being able to snack on it is very cool. not to mention impossible to prove and get in trouble for. clever. i think all of you should stick to the actual comic today. and drink tea with lots of honey. there’s a shortage of sweetness going on. just saying
Better yet, don’t reply to comments, ever, until you learn not to be a patronizing, unpleasant, egotistical jerk. Your pseudoapology will do nothing but confirm to others that you are a nasty snob who thinks ‘honesty’ is a license to insult anyone who doesn’t know a fact that he does. You didn’t resort to namecalling? Baloney! Using ‘ignorance’ instead of ‘ignoramus’ doesn’t make it any less of a personal insult. You’d ‘rather be honest than pander’? So who asked you to be honest about your inflated ego? Who says politely informing someone is pandering? And why do you think the Tall Tale Magritte reference should have been helpful even if someone noticed it? stlmaddog5 needed to know about the Magritte painting, and you posted it; good for you, as far as that goes. You need to know that you have acted like a repellent prig, so I’ve added myself to the dogpile of people who have pointed out your rudeness, in hopes that it will increase the chances of your enlightenment. Also, to save you the trouble: tl;dr.
I didn’t understand the comic today either until it was explained. I am not a fan of surrealism and can’t recall ever seeing the painting before… and, not being familiar with the painting, the reference to it in the ad on the side of the page meant nothing to me.I also fail to see why someone being ignorant of something that they are not interested in is anything to be ashamed of admitting in public.
Holy rotten apples Batman! This really opened Pandora’s Box today!.Anyway, I didn’t get the connection either. As I have said so many times before, hardly a day goes by I don’t learn something new! Hardly…

Careful, Lio. That’s a green apple. And it’s very old (1964). Wouldn’t want a tummyache now!

Lio has taken the Apple that Rene Magritte painted over the man’s face. I had to look it up to be sure. Mark Tatulli makes us think, once in a while.

Lio is an artwork as well as Magritte’s apple… He could actually “pull off” such a theft.
