Roland: Steve, as Virginia's Confederate heritage month winds down, I'm here at the Five Forks re-enactment camp... continuing my exclusive coverage of the Confederacy for Fox, the lupus of news! Voice: Uh... Roland? Did you just say we're the "lupus of news"? Roland: Uh... yes. That's what Jon Stewart calls us. Voice: So you thought you'd quote him? Roland: He's pretty trusted, Steve. Why, what's it mean?

Someday, Iâm going to make up window decals with a âNOâ circle/slash superimposed on a Confederate flag, and around the circle it will say âYOU LOST, REDNECK! GET OVER IT!â
I bet Iâll sell a million of them âŠ

Being a Civil War correspondent embedded with the Confederate forces seems to be the perfect assignment for Roland. After all, heâs a Rebel Without a Clue.

Ok, GT. I get it. You donât like Fox. Youâve kicked this dead horse all the way down to a fine powder.
How about you turn on MSNBC sometime and watch the antithesis buffoonery there some timeâŠ

Try unplugging the box and reading the Nation and the National Review. You might even begin to question instead of being spoon fed. Or watch Comedy Central, Fox, and MSNBC because they donât use big words or ideas.

rayaninna, Iâd be careful where you drive a car with that bumper sticker. Drive it down south, and youâre likely to not have a car for long.
BTW, when I moved down south (North Carolina) nearly 20 years ago (moved back north but still have friends there), I followed a truck on I-40 that had a bumper sticker that read: âKeep the South Clean; Buy a Yankee a bus ticket north.â
Personally, I think we should have just let them go. And maybe we ought to offer that option to those states today.

I donât watch any tv news. I get my news from NPR and CNN online.

Yeah, south hates Yankees, but has these right-to-work laws to take all the Yankee jobs they can. Of course, now that the same businesses are âimportingâ Spanish labor theyâre crying about it. Oddly, Unions would have kept them out. God does have a sense of humor, Wiley-ites notwithstanding.

I read Time and Newsweek, Lew. Nation is interesting if your a Catholic. NR lost something when Billy died. PJ has a few good columns and books, though.
See, you canât run from liberals and hide in ALL print.

What Iâm watching with interest is the Southern Repubs as they begin to whine for Federal aid to clean up a mess caused by private oil companies. How long before they cry for US bail out with Tax dollars? Anyone have that hypocrisy button ready to push? I can hardly wait for them to start complaining about how long it took Obama to fly over and send money.
For Sarah: âHowâs that âDrill , drill, drill!â thing working out for you?â

I love people who declare âI donât watch Fox Newsâ, as if being ignorant is something to brag about. Didnât Chris Rock do a comedy skit about that?
I question everything, which is why I read the NY Times, AND listen to NPR, AND watch Fox News (the 6 PM - 7 PM with Bret Baier is the best news hour on television, period, but donât waste your time with Shepard Smith). Each of these sources report on events that the others donât (or wonât). If you donât look at all sides but merely spit at what you donât like, you have no credibility at being âFairâ, âBalancedâ, or âIntelligentâ.
On the other hand, itâs scary that some folks get all their news from Comedy Central. Itâs almost as bad as getting all your news from slanted comic strips⊠like Doonesbury!
Nemesys almost 15 years ago
The southern Repubs wonât need to cry racism, complain, blame the president for their own lack of planning and action, or beg for federal dollars - theyâll leave that to Ray Nagen and his cronies to do that for all of them, since theyâre so experienced and successful at it.
Well, maybe Ray will keep the race card in his back pocket this time and save it for when the next Republican president is elected in â12.

Thereâs been drilling in the gulf for decades by thousands of rigs with no accidents, despite all the hurricanes that have barrelled through there.
After all that time, does nobody else find it odd that a rig âblows upâ within a month of a Democratic president announcing his support for more offshore oil drilling exploration?
Nemesys almost 15 years ago
Great point, mrwiseguy, but (unless the news sources is government financed and controlled), thereâs often different perspectives even in different countries. When in England, compare BBC with Sky News. Itâs like flipping between Fox and CNBC.

Apparently, a good many of you just volleyed out spouting your take on todayâs Doonesbury without realizing just what Roland said equating FOX News with Lupus. Perhaps the below definition will be helpful:
Lupus erythematosus is a connective tissue disease. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the bodyâs immune system attacks its own tissues and organs (autoimmunity). (Source: Wikipedia.com)

The world (and our commentors here) tend to divide between those who want smaller government and those who want bigger government, those who believe in individual rights and those who believe in some overarching collective dominating the individual.
Since each side is a literal danger to the other, it is natural that they disrespect if not downright hate each other.
I just ask that people be aware of their assumptions and donât hide them, like when we elected a socialist president because we never bothered to ask what kind of Change he had in mind.

Thanks, Al. I was just about to post that Roland apparently doesnât know that he had just called his employer a painful disease afflicting news.

People who watch Jon Stewart donât get their news from him. Stewart isnât funny unless you already know whatâs going on. Otherwise, his jokes donât make sense. Same goes for Stephen Colbert.

@freeholder===I posted the same thing the other day on an editorial comic where a poster compared Pres Obamaâs reaction to spill to GWBâs slow response to Katrina. Glad to have some validation. Also, my reaction to âLupusâ was Latin for Fox, but Mightaswellbe is right=it is Latin for wolf. Donât think GT meant the lupus disease.
GJ_Jehosaphat almost 15 years ago
I âmayâ have to tune in Faux News to see their take on all the Natural Disasters (as well as Un-Natural Ones) that have taken place the last couple of weeks. Oil Spilling into the Gulf, Tornados in the South, Floods in Tennessee â Federal Funding Requests to help clean up the mess so people can cope with these disasters. Just wondering if Fox News Commentators (and TEA Baggers) will drop their âNanny Stateâ B.S. and see U.S. as working together so we all can enjoy living in this great country.
BTW - Thanks Alabama-Al for posting the LUPUS definition & good observation about comments too.

So right, runar, and Stewart operates at a pretty high level. I have heard Leno discuss keeping everything simple enough that everone can understand, even when a little sleepy and on the back side of a couple of drinks. Stewart often shoots over the head of a part of his audience( as he did Roland), but thatâs why heâs stimulating while Leno is dull and predictable.
From my perpective, Foxâs problem is that they picked their audience and slant ahead of time, in what appears to be a top-down fashion. In other words, executives hired conservatives to report to conservatives from a decidedly conservative slant.
Spaghettus1 almost 15 years ago
Checking a foreign source is an excellent suggestion, and can be eye-opening at times. A few months back, I heard a discussion of British political/election reform. Someone brought up using American ideas. Someone else pointed out that the US has a congress of millionaires, and everyone else agreed, and that was the end of using ideas from America. If only we were more aware of our own problemâŠ..the fact that no one can get elected without having millions of their own money, or getting money with strings attached from the power-makers who seek to run things from the shadows.
bagbalm almost 15 years ago
You suckers who argue about which party front organization is superior are deluded there is a difference. The differences are only emotional issues used to manage you peons and make sure you never interfere with the serious looting of your wealth. You can choose jackass A or Jackass B and the end result is the same. Wake me up when you figure out you are a slave.
Spaghettus1 almost 15 years ago
Insightful comment, psche, but your own slant still shows when you frame the discussion in your terms. I think we can pretty much agree that âsome overarching collective dominating the individualâ is a bad thing that we would all like to avoid. Personally, I donât see needed regulation and an improved safety net for the unfortunate as domination.
Likewise when you classify Obama as a socialist. He may be relatively socialistic compared to the right, but he is actually a pragmatic (not laissez-faire) capitalist. In the face of the current oil spill, a true socialist would use this opportunity to push for government ownership of the entire US energy economy. A true socialist would be pushing to hold onto the bank and other interests we aquired through TARP and other bail-outs, but the Obama administration is attempting to unload whatever they can as soon as reasonably possible. Socialist has become just another chunk of mud to sling.

Believe it or not, Roland may be the best thing for Fox News.
Itâs like Ira Nayman saidâŠâRolandâs cluelessness is still hilariousâ.
And people need a good laugh in their lives now and then. So as long as he keeps doing what heâs doing, Fox News will always have an audience. Which means their ratings will be secure.
Otherwise, Fox would have fired him years ago.

Even bagbalm makes a good point, though insulting the entire board is not a good way to make people see things your way.
Check this quote; Mr. TOM DeLAY (Former Representative, Republican, Texas): (as Himself) âMoney is not evil. Money is free speech. Money is involvement. And as long as itâs open and transparent so that the electorate can see whoâs giving money, whoâs taking money and how is it being spent, itâs a system thatâs extremely necessaryâ
So, if money is free speech, does that mean only the rich deserve to be heard? If youâre a Congressman, probably so.

âfoxâ in Latin is âvulpesâ; hence the adjective âvulpineâ. I guess that makes a Fox News announcer a âvulpanoâ.

rayannina, you might want to sell your stickers at Stuckies, thatâs their road side attraction. The only thing they sell there is gas, pecans, and âForget Hellâ coffee cups. I bet they sell millions of them. By nature they are naturally combative and belligerent. The Pakistanis know, theyâre dealing with the equivalents in the NW Territories.
We moved to SC in â61 from Vietnam, during the centennial ( I started first grade in Vietnam). Ice breakers for the new kid was, âAre you a Yankee or a Reb?â They made such a big deal about the centennial, you would have thought it was bigger than the Olympics. We had CSA indoc. in the 1st grade. Thatâs when they put the battle flag on the State House. Before then, there was no tradition of flying the flag after the war. Later on as a compromise they took it off State House and put it by itself on the State House grounds. Now that its closer, I think it looks bigger.
Pardon the re-run but its got some relevance.

Hereâs another I found the same site. The conservative group described simply reeks of homo eroticism.

Iâm with you cdward, we should have just let them go (and we could start now with Texas). Would have saved lots of lives, they would have had to end slavery before long anyway and they wouldnât have those ânasty yankeesâ to blame for everything.
And can we hardly wait for the victims of the flooding in those staunch tea-bag states to request aid from that government they love to hate and donât think they should have to pay for.

âThereâs nothing homoerotic about homophobes!â
Homophobia usually precedes ( or masks) the other. Trust me on this one.
Maybe I should have been more precise: â The conservative group described simply reeks of âsuppressedâ homo eroticism.â
